Justice Surya Kant Takes Oath as the new Chief Justice Of India, officially assuming office on Monday during a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath, marking the beginning of his 14-month tenure as the head of the Indian judiciary. He succeeds former CJI Bhushan R. Gavai, who retired on Sunday after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65. Justice Gavai continued the long-standing tradition of recommending the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court as his successor.

Journey of an Inspiring Legal Mind

Born on February 10, 1962, in Haryana, Justice Surya Kant hails from a humble background. He began practising law in Hisar in 1984 and later shifted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh. With an impressive legal track record, he represented various government institutions, corporations, banks, and educational bodies, gaining wide recognition for his knowledge and commitment.
In July 2000, he became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana and received the designation of Senior Advocate in 2001. His judicial elevation began in 2004 when he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He later served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from 2018 until his elevation to the Supreme Court in May 2019. Recently, he has also served as the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee since November 2024.

He announced the formation of Constitution Benches—comprising five, seven, and nine judges—to address critical constitutional matters that have been pending for years.

Justice Surya Kant stressed the importance of enhancing mediation as a tool to reduce the increasing burden on the judiciary. He highlighted the potential of community mediation to ease conflicts involving states and intergovernmental disputes. According to him, providing a supportive legal environment for mediation is essential to resolving conflicts faster and more effectively.
He also commented on the role of artificial intelligence in the justice system. While acknowledging the benefits of AI in administrative processes, he stated that judicial decisions must remain human-driven to maintain fairness and trust.

Addressing India’s Massive Case Backlog

India currently faces a staggering total of 5.29 crore pending cases according to the National Judicial Data Grid. Of these, 4.65 crore cases lie in district courts, 63.30 lakh in High Courts, and nearly 87,000 cases await hearing before the Supreme Court. Justice Surya Kant Takes Oath at a pivotal moment, determined to lead reforms that will improve efficiency, accessibility, and transparency in the Indian judiciary.
