Opposition Criticizes PM Modi’s 2024 Red Fort Claim: Political Divide conspicuous in Independence Day 2023 Responses
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s declaration during this Independence Day 2023 address that he anticipates delivering the speech from the Red Fort’s ramparts in 2024 has sparked a contentious exchange between the ruling BJP and opposition parties. PM Modi’s assertion about listing India’s accomplishments and progress from the Red Fort next year has drawn criticism from opposition leaders, as the next Independence Day falls after the Lok Sabha polls. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge termed it as an expression of arrogance from the senior BJP leader.

While addressing the nation on the 77th Independence Day, PM Modi stated, “The next 5 years are for unprecedented development. The most significant moment to realize the dream of 2047 is these next 5 years. And on the 15th of August next year, from this very Red Fort, I will present to you the country’s achievements, your capabilities, the progress achieved with even greater self-confidence.”
Opposition Slams PM Arrogance
The response from the opposition was swift as Mallikarjun Kharge labeled the Prime Minister’s words as arrogant, criticizing his intent to speak about the next year’s achievements already. “What he is saying is talk of arrogance. Now it is 2023 and to say that he will again unfurl the national flag in 2024 (at the Red Fort) is speaking out of durankaar, ahankaar (arrogance),” he stated. He also raised concerns about the Prime Minister’s habit of criticizing the opposition even on Independence Day, questioning the kind of India he is striving to build.
Lalu Prasad Dismisses PM Claim
Lalu Prasad, the leader of the RJD, was equally dismissive of PM Modi’s claim. When asked if Modi would be able to unfurl the tricolor next year, he responded with a firm “Nahin, na (no, not at all).” Pushed for further comment, he declared, “This is his last time.” He expressed confidence that his party would come to power in 2024.

Bihar BJP chief Samrat Choudhary, countered these statements,claiming that PM Modi has hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort for the past 10 years and will continue to do so for the next 10 years. The opposition’s doubt about Modi’s future Independence Day address remained unchanged.
During his Independence Day speech, PM Modi used the opportunity to take aim at the opposition. He denounced corruption, nepotism, and appeasement as three significant factors that have significantly harmed the country. He emphasized the collective responsibility to promote probity, transparency, and impartiality to facilitate India’s development.
He stated, “If the dreams have to be fulfilled… then it is the need of the hour to fight the three evils decisively at all levels. The three evils are corruption, nepotism, and accommodation.” He called upon the citizens to confront these challenges vigorously. He contended that these issues have stifled the aspirations of the country’s people.
Khurshid Criticizes PM Confusion
Congress leader Salman Khurshid criticized PM Modi for seemingly confusing a national day with a political event. “It’s a matter of great sadness if a leader or PM doesn’t know the difference between a national day and a political event”, he remarked.
AAP Calls Modi Speech Farewell
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regarded Modi’s address as a farewell speech. AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj commented, “I believe it was PM Modi’s farewell speech. Although he tried to list out all the work that was done in the last 10 years, there was nothing worth mentioning.”

Tejashwi Disapproves PM Speech
Bihar’s deputy chief minister, Tejashwi Yadav, expressed his disappointment at the Prime Minister bringing politics into an Independence Day speech. He highlighted the expectations for discussions on employment opportunities, Startup India, Make in India, and doubling farmers’ income. Instead, PM Modi’s speech touched on issues like corruption. Yadav emphasized the perceived threats to democracy, inflation, and unemployment.
