Govt appoints IPS officer Ravi Sinha as RAW chief

The Govt appoints IPS Officer Sinha as RAW chief as the tenure of the current chief Samant Kumar Goel is drawing to an end on 30th June.

IPS Officer Sinha as RAW chief: Who is he and Why is it such a big deal?

According to an official notification from the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievance, and Pensions the Government of India has appointed IPS Officer Ravi Sinha as RAW Chief. 

The notification states that The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of IPS Ravi Sinha as Secretary of the Research & Analysis Wing. He will be taking over Shri Samant Kumar Goel, IPS, on completion of his tenure on 30th June 2023. The post will be held by Ravi Sinha for a tenure of two years from the date of assumption of the charge of the post. 

Who is Ravi Sinha?

Ravi Sinha is a senior officer of the prestigious Indian Police Service (IPS) from the 1988 batch of the Chhattisgarh cadre. He is currently serving as the Special Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat.

He comes with years of experience and has been working with the intelligence agency in the capacity of head of the operational wing. He has also worked in regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeast of India, and Punjab and against Left-Wing Extremism. 

Samant Kumar Goel as RAW Chief

Goel, the current Chief of RAW was given the post in 2019 and given one-year extensions twice in 2021 and 2022. Goel has been an extremely content Chief who has handled many sensitive issues during his tenure. One of his biggest achievements was the 2019 Surgical strike in Balakot, Pakistan. The surgical strike was a response to the Pulwama terror attack and helped India score a major win against terrorism.

The premier agency helps in gathering foreign intelligence, counter-terrorism, counter-proliferation, security of India’s nuclear program, and more. It was formed on 21st September 1968, and over the years has helped India be safe and protected from many attacks. It is headquartered in New Delhi and has Special Formations or field formations all across the country.
