 Delhi government’s branch of drugs management on Thursday wrote to chemist associations of Delhi directing over-the-counter to avoid selling nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including aspirin, ibuprofen, and diclofenac. The pharmacies can sell these drug treatments only after over-the-counter prescriptions issued by a registered medical practitioner. The order was issued keeping in mind the rising instances of vector-borne illnesses including dengue and chikungunya in the countrywide capital.

Pharmacies are also ordered to maintain a record of painkiller tablets sold, falling underneath this department. Stringent action might be taken against retail chemists if they’re found ” flouting this recommendation,” the letter by KR Chawla, head of the drugs management authority, stated.

Senior officers stated that over the counter advisory has been issued over the fact that unsupervised NSAIDs are thought to destroy platelets in human blood. The  use of such drugs may be harmful for patients suffering with diseases which includes dengue and chikungunya.
