Torrential rainfall drenches Delhi, ‘Yellow’ alert issued by IMD.

Delhi was hit by heavy rainfall on Sunday morning, providing respite from the intense heat but leading to difficulties for commuters. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city received 3 mm of rain in the 24 hours up to 8:30 am on Saturday. However, the rainfall escalated on Sunday, with Delhi experiencing 153 mm of rain within a 24-hour span. This rainfall figure is the highest recorded in a single day in July since 1982. The IMD has issued a ‘Yellow’ alert, signaling the possibility of significant rainfall for the day.

Heavy rainfall hits Delhi:

This significant rainfall can be attributed to an interaction between a western disturbance and monsoonal winds, resulting in an intense rainfall spell over northwest India, including Delhi. The IMD had previously forecast high-intensity rain for 2-3 days in Delhi. The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded 98.7 mm of rainfall by 2:30 pm on Saturday.

Yellow alert:

The IMD issued a “yellow alert” for Sunday, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall. Charan Singh, Head of IMD Delhi, stated that the region would witness high-intensity rain for a few days, providing some relief from the heat. The IMD’s forecast also mentioned isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, East Rajasthan, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and Punjab during specific dates.

Rainfall alerts across regions:

The Met office further stated that light to moderate intensity rain would continue in many places in Delhi and the National Capital Regions, as well as in various locations in Haryana. The IMD urged people in the affected areas to take necessary precautions against heavy rainfall.

An orange alert was also issued for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Ajay Kumar Singh from the Meteorological Department in Chandigarh stated that the monsoon had arrived in Punjab and Haryana earlier than usual, with a Western Disturbance becoming active. He mentioned that orange and yellow alerts have been issued for most places in these regions.

Delhi rain wreaks havoc:

While the heavy rainfall provided relief from the heat, it also caused damage to several houses and resulted in the loss of one life. The Delhi Fire Service reported that 15 houses collapsed due to the heavy rains. Additionally, the preparations for the upcoming G20 Summit events in Delhi were exposed as heavy rain wreaked havoc in the city. Waterlogging was reported in various underpasses, roads, and flyovers, leading to difficulties for motorists, pedestrians, and traders.

Waterlogging plagues Delhi roads:

The Minto Bridge underpass was closed due to waterlogging, and similar conditions were observed at the Tilak Bridge underpass. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) noted that the main drains were operating at maximum capacity, resulting in water overflowing onto the roads. Waterlogging was reported in several locations, including Pandav Nagar underpass, Purana Quila Road, Dwarka Link Road, NH-48 near Shiv Murti, Rohtak Road, Vikas Marg, and various flyovers.

North India braces for heavy rain:

The heavy rainfall also affected other parts of North India, with the IMD issuing heavy rainfall alerts for Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and West Uttar Pradesh. The IMD advised residents to be prepared for intense rain and to take necessary precautions.

Overall, while the heavy rainfall brought relief from the heat, it also caused disruptions and challenges in various areas of Delhi. Authorities and residents are working to manage the waterlogging and minimize further damage caused by the heavy downpour.
