Auto-rickshaw Driver Arrested for Bridge Shortcut in Delhi

A 25-year-old auto-rickshaw driver in south Delhi’s Hamdard Nagar found himself in trouble after a widely-shared video showed him driving his vehicle onto a pedestrian foot-over-bridge to evade a traffic jam. Following the video’s circulation, Delhi Police took swift action, arresting the driver, identified only as Munna, and his relative, Amit, who assisted in pushing the auto-rickshaw up the staircase.

Unusual Route Due to Illness

Munna and Amit, residents of Sangam Vihar, claimed that they resorted to this unusual route because Munna’s mother was unwell. Chandan Chowdhary, the deputy commissioner of police (south), stated that Munna was arrested under the Delhi Police Act for taking the auto-rickshaw onto the pedestrian overbridge, while Amit was also detained under relevant provisions empowering police to make preventive arrests.

Although it’s not uncommon for bicycles and motorcycles to use pedestrian foot-over-bridges in the city, the act was highly unusual for an auto-rickshaw. The incident occurred on a Wednesday, but legal action was initiated on the following Sunday after the video gained widespread attention.
