Delhi-NCR Shivers as Temperature Falls to 3°C, Dense Fog Triggers IMD Alert

Delhi-NCR reels as temperature falls to 3°C, with IMD issuing red alerts for dense fog, cold wave conditions, and possible travel disruptions.

Delhi-NCR Shivers as Temperature Falls to 3°C, IMD Issues Red Alert for Dense Fog and Cold Wave Conditions

Residents across Delhi-NCR woke up to biting cold and near-zero visibility as temperatures plunged sharply, touching 3°C in several areas. A thick blanket of fog enveloped the national capital region early Thursday morning, significantly disrupting daily life and prompting multiple weather warnings from authorities.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alerts for dense to very dense fog conditions, warning that visibility levels could drop drastically during early morning and night hours. The severe winter spell has intensified concerns around road safety, air travel disruptions, and public health.

Dense Fog Paralyzes Morning Commute

A thick layer of fog covered major parts of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad, reducing visibility to dangerously low levels. Commuters experienced slow-moving traffic, delays, and increased accident risks, especially on highways and arterial roads.

According to IMD advisories, very dense fog was likely to occur over central, north, northwest, south, and southwest Delhi regions during early hours. Meteorologists cautioned that such conditions could persist intermittently over the next few days.

The sharp drop in visibility also affected railway operations, with several trains running behind schedule due to safety protocols triggered by foggy conditions.

Airport Issues Orange Alert Due to Low Visibility

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport issued an orange alert as visibility dipped to extremely low levels. Airport authorities warned passengers of potential flight delays, diversions, and cancellations.

Flight operations were conducted under CAT III conditions, a specialized navigation system that allows aircraft to land even when visibility drops to as low as 50 meters. While this system helps maintain operations, delays remained unavoidable due to congestion and safety checks.

Passengers were advised to check flight statuses in advance and allow extra time for airport travel due to fog-related road delays.

IMD Issues Cold Wave Warning Across North India

Along with dense fog alerts, the IMD issued a cold wave warning for several northern states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and parts of Delhi-NCR.

Weather officials stated that dense to very dense fog is likely to prevail during morning and night hours in isolated to some areas until mid-January. In western Uttar Pradesh, similar conditions may extend further, intensifying the winter chill across the region.

The IMD also cautioned that cold wave conditions could affect isolated pockets, increasing health risks for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions.

Temperature Trends and Forecast

According to weather data, the minimum temperature in Delhi is expected to remain below normal, ranging between 1.6°C and 3.0°C, while maximum temperatures may stay slightly above normal by a similar margin.

For Friday, the IMD forecast predicts a partly cloudy sky with shallow to moderate fog during morning hours. The minimum temperature is expected to hover between 6°C and 8°C, while daytime temperatures could reach 22°C to 24°C.

Despite slightly warmer afternoons, cold mornings and nights are expected to continue, keeping winter conditions harsh across Delhi-NCR.

Advisory for Public Safety

Authorities have urged residents to take precautions amid the intense cold. People are advised to limit early morning travel, wear adequate warm clothing, and drive cautiously under foggy conditions.

Health experts recommend staying hydrated, protecting the skin from dryness, and avoiding prolonged exposure to cold, especially during early hours. Homeless shelters and night shelters have been placed on high alert to accommodate those affected by extreme weather.

Regional Impact Beyond Delhi-NCR

Cold wave conditions are also likely in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and western Uttar Pradesh over the coming days. The widespread impact highlights the severity of the winter system affecting northern and eastern India.

Conclusion

As Delhi-NCR shivers with temperatures falling to 3°C, the combination of dense fog and cold wave conditions has disrupted daily routines and raised safety concerns. With IMD warnings in place, residents are advised to remain cautious and prepared as winter tightens its grip on the region.

Weather officials continue to monitor conditions closely, and further advisories are expected if the cold spell intensifies.
