Delhi Electoral Roll Discrepancies Explained: Why 33 Lakh Voters Were Flagged in Voter List SIR Over Name Mismatch, Age Gap and Verification Issues
Delhi’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll has brought attention to discrepancies involving around 33.13 lakh electors. The exercise has flagged voters for issues ranging from missing links with the previous electoral roll to differences in names, parent details and age relationships. Importantly, receiving a notice does not automatically mean that a voter’s name will be deleted from the electoral roll, according to the Delhi CEO.
Why Were 33 Lakh Voters Flagged?
The Election Commission and Delhi election authorities are conducting SIR to verify and update electoral records. The draft electoral roll published on August 31 covered more than 97 lakh voters, while notices were generated for electors whose submitted information showed discrepancies during the verification process.
According to the latest data, around 13.79 lakh electors were classified as “unmapped” with the previous SIR, while approximately 19.33 lakh were flagged for what authorities describe as logical discrepancies. These categories cover several different types of data inconsistencies rather than one single problem.
The Delhi electoral roll discrepancies therefore do not necessarily indicate that all affected voters are ineligible. Instead, the notices provide an opportunity to verify or correct information.
Name Mismatch Is One of the Major Reasons
A significant portion of the notices relates to differences between names appearing in current and previous electoral records. These may involve the voter’s own name or the name of a parent.
Recent analysis of the notice data found that name mismatches accounted for about 41% of notices when the different discrepancy reasons are counted, with parent-name mismatches accounting for roughly 24% and self-name mismatches about 17%.
Such differences can arise from variations in spelling, names used in different records or changes in how information was entered over different electoral revisions. The notice process allows officials and voters to examine these differences rather than treating every mismatch as proof of ineligibility.
Why Are Age Gaps Being Checked?
Another category involves unusual age relationships between voters and their parents or children. The current SIR data includes checks involving parent-age differences, parent-child relationships and other logical combinations.
According to the latest analysis, age-related discrepancies account for approximately 16% of notices. Categories include unusually small or large parent-age differences and certain parent-child age gaps.
These automated checks are designed to identify records that require additional verification. An age-gap flag by itself does not establish that a voter is ineligible.
Prominent Names Also Appeared on the List
The SIR verification has also attracted attention because several well-known public figures appeared among voters receiving notices. Reports have identified L K Advani, S Jaishankar, Jagdeep Dhankhar and others among those affected by discrepancies or mapping issues.
For example, reports said Advani and some family members were listed under the “no mapping” category, while Jaishankar and his wife were also identified in connection with the mapping exercise. These cases demonstrate that receiving a notice is not limited to ordinary voters and does not by itself establish that a person’s electoral eligibility has been rejected.
What Happens After a Voter Receives a Notice?
The next step is voter verification. Electors receiving notices can provide the documents requested under the applicable SIR procedure. Reports indicate that the Election Commission has listed documents such as birth certificates, passports, caste certificates and permanent residence certificates among the documents that may be used. Aadhaar alone does not establish eligibility under the stated documentation requirements.
The claims and objections stage is an important part of the electoral roll revision process. Voters can use this period to address discrepancies, submit supporting documents and raise objections where appropriate.
What Does the Delhi CEO Say About Deletion?
The Delhi CEO has clarified that issuance of a notice does not automatically mean deletion from the electoral roll. Officials have stated that no voter can simply be removed without an opportunity to be heard and an appropriate order under the prescribed procedure.
The Delhi CEO has also emphasized that the electoral roll is a continuously updated statutory record and that changes can occur for several legally prescribed reasons, including relocation, death, duplicate enrolment or eligibility-related findings.
What Should Delhi Voters Do Next?
Voters who receive an SIR notice should first check the reason mentioned in the notice and review their electoral details carefully. They should then follow the instructions issued by the election authorities and provide the required documents within the applicable claims and objections process.
The SIR exercise is still underway, so the current list of flagged voters should not be confused with a final decision on electoral eligibility. The Voter list will continue to undergo verification before the final electoral roll is published.
For Delhi residents, the key takeaway is that a discrepancy notice is a verification step. Whether the issue involves a name mismatch, an age gap or an inability to map a record to the previous revision, voters have a process through which they can clarify their information and support their eligibility.
