Condoms In Wedding Kits Of Brides At MP’s Mass Weddings Sparks Debate

The newly added contraceptives and condoms in wedding kits of brides at Madhya Pradesh’s mass wedding event at Jhabua district turn out to be quite a controversial topic for many.

But aren’t brides the ones who need these the most? We know that the Indian culture is against premarital sex, but is marital sex also against the Indian culture?

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan started the Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah/Nikah Yojana in 2006, a wedding scheme for women from economically weaker sections of the society. In this scheme, the government provides the bride’s family with an amount of Rs 55, 000, and gifts condoms and contraceptives to the newlyweds.

Congress criticising the condoms in wedding kits of brides:

However, many, specifically the Congress, started calling this gift as “shameful” and “offensive.” Newlyweds need such gifts the most. Newlyweds’ engaging in consensual sexual activities is natural, not “shameful” or “offensive.”

On Twitter, Congress said, “The BJP government of Madhya Pradesh has distributed condoms and contraceptive tablets in makeup boxes given under the Kanya Vivah Yojana. Shivraj Ji, do you have any shame left?”

Replying to this, Tarun Jain, SDM Thandla clarified that there are Nayi Pehal Kits rather than make up boxes which were given to newlyweds for family planning. The Congress needs to understand that Indians are the ones who need to do family planning the most.

After being put under the spotlight, senior district official Bhursingh Rawat, put the blame on the state health department. He said, “We are not responsible for distributing the condoms and the contraceptive pills. It is possible that the health department gave away the material as part of its family planning awareness program. Under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah/Nikah Yojana, we transfer ₹ 49,000 directly to the beneficiary’s bank account. We are responsible for providing food, water, and a tent, which amounts to ₹ 6,000. I had no idea what was in the packets that were distributed.”

This is the second time that the scheme has come under public scrutiny. Earlier this summer, a few brides at the mass wedding were forced to take pregnancy tests prior to their wedding at a mass wedding ceremony of Dindori’s Gadsarai area. A woman whose test turned out to be positive was not allowed to participate at the event.
