Canada-India Relations ‘Important’: Amid Tensions, Minister Stresses Bilateral Significance

Amid the Hardeep Singh Nijjar investigation, Canadian Defence Minister Bill Blair underscores the importance of the India-Canada relationship. Allegations by Prime Minister Trudeau had strained diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The situation escalated when India vehemently rejected the allegations, deeming them “absurd” and “motivated.” In response, India expelled a senior Canadian diplomat, reciprocating Ottawa’s expulsion of an Indian official connected to the case.

Before the allegations came to light, Canada had been actively seeking to strengthen trade, defence, and immigration ties with India. Blair acknowledged the complexities of the situation, emphasizing Canada’s responsibility to uphold the law, protect its citizens, and conduct a thorough investigation while maintaining a constructive relationship with India.

If the allegations were to be substantiated, Blair highlighted that there would be serious concerns about the violation of Canada’s sovereignty, particularly in the context of a Canadian citizen’s murder on Canadian soil.

Diplomatic Tensions

Despite the diplomatic tensions, Blair affirmed Canada’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific strategy. This strategy led to an increased military presence in the region and additional commitments for patrol capabilities. The Canadian government had allocated significant funding, including $492.9 million over five years, to support military priorities related to the Indo-Pacific strategy, totalling nearly $2.3 billion over the same period.

In response to the deteriorating relationship, India took measures, including suspending visa services for Canadians and requesting Canada to address anti-India elements and terrorists operating from its territory. India also asked for a reduction in the size of Canada’s diplomatic staff in India, emphasizing the need for parity in diplomatic representation.
