What has the Budget 2023 Failed to Address?

Budget 2023 has failed to address some critical points. What are they?

What has the Budget 2023 failed to address? Let’s see The start of February month was exciting, with the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presenting the Budget 2023. As this budget also marks the last full budget of Modi Government 2.0, big changes were anticipated. It was expected that the government would address some questions that the Indian economy needs right now. But has the government been able to address these critical points?

There is no denying that the budget has made some crucial announcements, as rightly pointed out amid many oppositions, but it has failed to address these points-

How does the government plan to tackle the increasing rate of inflation?

Arvind Kejriwal also addresses this in his tweet, “There is no relief from inflation in this budget. On the contrary, this budget will lead to a price rise.”

Why has there been a cut in the budget for such an essential sector like health? If the Covid-19 pandemic taught us anything, it was the need to have a solid and robust health system. So, when the budget for the National Health Mission is reduced to Rs 36,785 crore this year from Rs 37,165 crore in 2022-23- we need to understand why there is no major boost in the health sector.

Sujatha Rao, former Secretary of Health and Family Welfare tweets- “Most boring budget in so far as health sector is concerned. Barring setting up 157 nursing colleges nothing else for health that is crying for huge capital investment and some financial risk protection for the lower middle classes. Yet another year gone by. Very disappointing.”

The budget 2023 also cuts the allocation to Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) by 32%. There has been a lot of debate regarding this rural employment guarantee act in the past as well. Opposition leaders feel that there should have been an increase in the allocation to MGNREGS instead of a budget cut.

How to tackle the growing rate of unemployment?

Unemployment is one of the biggest concerns in the country today, but no direct measures to improve this has been focused in the budget.

No mention of transgender people in the budget

The budget has failed to mention an entire section of society- the transgender people. With no allocation of funds for them or improving facilities for their better treatment and equality, the budget is a huge step back for the community.

Priya Babu, an activist and filmmaker says (Budget fails to address gender inequality, women development: Expert- The New Indian Express)- “Transpersons are still fighting for social acceptance and recognition in the family. In such a situation, the government neglecting them in the budget is regretful.”

While the budget has failed to address these major issues, they have made some important commitments regarding boosting agriculture, consumption, and the economy as a whole. It remains to be seen if the government will fulfill its promises and ensure another term or disappoint people by unmet promises.
