The suspended officer, identified as Abhishek Patel, was reportedly serving as part of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) deployed to maintain law and order during the July 25 Bihar Bandh protests. Authorities confirmed that disciplinary action was taken after the video surfaced on social media, while a departmental probe is underway to determine whether established protocols were followed.
Violence Erupted During Bihar Bandh
The incident occurred as students and various organizations participated in the statewide bandh demanding accountability over the alleged NEET paper leak. In Siwan, protesters marched through the city, and tensions escalated after confrontations broke out between demonstrators and police personnel.
According to officials, the situation turned violent in several areas, leading to clashes between security forces and protesters. The viral video, which appears to show a police officer firing an AK-47 rifle, quickly gained attention online and triggered demands for accountability.
Three FIRs Registered
Following the violence, police registered three separate FIRs related to the clashes.
Authorities have named nearly 100 individuals in the cases, while complaints have also been filed against around 200 unidentified persons. Police have launched raids to identify and arrest those allegedly involved in the violence.
Reports indicate that approximately 25 accused persons were remanded to judicial custody after undergoing medical examinations at Sadar Hospital in Siwan.
Three Students Injured During Clashes
Three people injured during the protest are currently receiving treatment at Jayprabha Medanta Hospital in Patna. Hospital sources have stated that all of them are in stable condition.
One of the injured is reportedly 15-year-old Md Arif. According to his family, Arif was returning home after closing the shop where he worked when he was struck by a bullet during the unrest. Doctors successfully removed the bullet through surgery, and his condition is said to be improving.
Opposition Leaders Demand Accountability
The incident has sparked strong political reactions. Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav shared the viral video on social media and demanded strict action against the officials responsible. He alleged that police resorted to direct firing on students participating in the protest and called for an impartial investigation into the incident.

Rahul Gandhi Criticises Government
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also criticised the government over the handling of the student protests.
In a post on X, Gandhi alleged that excessive force had been used against students protesting in Bihar and Delhi. He questioned the government’s approach toward demonstrators and urged authorities to ensure justice for those affected during the protests.
Investigation Underway
Officials have confirmed that an internal investigation is in progress to establish the sequence of events and determine whether the use of force complied with standard operating procedures. The findings of the inquiry are expected to decide whether further disciplinary or legal action will be taken.
The incident has once again brought attention to the law-and-order response during student protests, with calls from various quarters for transparency, accountability, and a fair investigation into the events that unfolded in Siwan.
