LPU Controversy: Students Claim They Were Told What to Say in Rape Rumours Video

The LPU controversy has taken a new turn after three students from Lovely Professional University (LPU) alleged that the university administration instructed them on what to say in a video addressing rumours of sexual assault on campus. The students also claimed that their statements were edited and shared on social media without their consent.

The development has intensified scrutiny of the university’s response to the allegations, which triggered student protests, property damage and disruption at the Punjab campus.

The controversy centres on an alleged incident involving a female student, claims concerning Girls’ Hostel 3, and a clarification video released by Registrar Dr Monika Gulati. Police have initiated an investigation into the allegations, while the university has maintained that claims circulating on social media are false.

The LPU student protests reportedly began after allegations circulated among students that a female student had been sexually assaulted by a construction worker on campus. Some students also claimed that the hostel authorities had been informed about the alleged incident but failed to take appropriate action.

Rumours subsequently spread that the student had died by suicide after the alleged assault. However, these claims remain subject to investigation and should not be treated as established facts.

The allegations prompted students to gather on campus and demand accountability. The situation escalated when protesters reportedly damaged university property, set objects on fire and blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway.

The university rejected the allegations circulating online, describing them as false and misleading.

Amid growing unrest, Dr Monika Gulati, Registrar of Lovely Professional University, released a video addressing the controversy.

The video featured three female students identified as residents of Room No. 504 in Girls’ Hostel 3 (GH3), which had been mentioned in the allegations circulating among students.

The students stated that no such incident had occurred in their room and requested that fellow students and police personnel stop repeatedly approaching them.

Dr Gulati presented their statements as part of the university’s clarification and described the unrest as involving fabricated claims intended to damage the institution’s reputation.

The video was subsequently shared through the university’s social media channels.

The controversy deepened when the same students reportedly appeared in another video disputing how their earlier statements were recorded and published.

According to their allegations, the LPU administration instructed them to record statements addressing complaints that students and others were disturbing them.

One student claimed that portions of the original recording were removed before the video was uploaded to Instagram. The students further alleged that they were not informed about the editing and publication process and that their consent had not been obtained.

They also expressed concern about facing online abuse and unwanted attention following the circulation of the video.

These allegations have raised questions about consent, the presentation of student statements and the university’s communication strategy during a sensitive campus incident. However, the students’ claims about the recording process remain allegations and require independent verification.

What Is the Connection With Hostel Room 504?

The reference to hostel room 504 became central to the public discussion because the university’s clarification video specifically featured students residing in that room.

The students initially denied that an incident had occurred inside their room. In their subsequent account, however, they reportedly questioned why their room had been connected to the controversy and maintained that they had no involvement in the alleged incident.

Their statements have added another dimension to the LPU controversy, particularly concerning how information about the alleged incident was communicated and interpreted.

It is important to distinguish the residents’ statements about their room from the broader allegations involving another student. A denial concerning one hostel room does not independently establish whether a separate incident occurred elsewhere on campus.

According to reports, a case was registered based on a student’s statement, while police also indicated that the allegations required further investigation.

Following the unrest, LPU announced a 10-day suspension of classes beginning September 28, 2026. Mid-term examinations were also postponed until further notice.
