Operation Aaghat: Delhi Police Arrest Over 150 Criminals, Seize Arms, Liquor and Ganja Ahead of New Year

Ahead of the New Year celebrations, the Delhi Police launched a massive special enforcement drive named Operation Aaghat to curb criminal activity and strengthen law and order across South-East Delhi. The operation resulted in the arrest of more than 150 criminals and the seizure of illegal arms, drugs, liquor, and stolen property.

The drive was carried out as part of preventive policing measures to ensure public safety during a period typically marked by increased movement, gatherings, and potential law-and-order challenges.

Large-Scale Police Deployment Across the District

Operation Aaghat involved extensive deployment of police personnel across multiple locations in South-East Delhi. Checkpoints were set up, suspicious individuals were questioned, and targeted action was taken against known offenders and crime-prone areas.

According to police officials, the operation was carefully planned and executed to create a visible police presence, deter criminal elements, and reassure the public ahead of the New Year festivities.

Over 1,000 People Questioned During the Drive

During the course of Operation Aaghat, police teams questioned over 1,000 individuals at various checkpoints and locations. Many of those questioned were verified under preventive provisions to stop potential offences before they could take place.

Officials stated that the questioning and verification process was essential to identify repeat offenders, prevent organised crime, and disrupt illegal activities operating at the street level.

Hundreds Arrested and Detained Under Various Laws

As part of the crackdown, police arrested a total of 285 accused under different legal provisions. These arrests were made under laws including the Arms Act, Excise Act, NDPS Act, and Gambling Act.

In addition, 504 individuals were apprehended under preventive action to maintain peace and prevent possible offences. Police also detained 116 listed bad characters, individuals with known criminal records in the district, as part of focused surveillance and control measures.

The operation also led to the arrest of 10 property offenders and five auto-lifters, dealing a significant blow to theft and vehicle-related crimes in the area.

Major Seizures of Arms, Liquor, and Drugs

Operation Aaghat resulted in substantial recoveries of illegal items. Police seized 21 country-made pistols, 20 live cartridges, and 27 knives, underscoring concerns over the circulation of illegal weapons ahead of public celebrations.

In addition to arms, a massive quantity of illicit liquor was recovered. Police seized 12,258 quarters of illegal liquor, highlighting ongoing challenges related to illegal alcohol trade, particularly during festive periods.

Drug enforcement was another key focus of the operation. Officers recovered 6.01 kilograms of ganja, reinforcing the police’s zero-tolerance approach toward narcotics.

Recovery of Stolen Property and Vehicles

The operation also proved effective in recovering stolen property. Police seized Rs 2,30,990 in cash linked to gambling-related activities and recovered 310 mobile phones that had been snatched, robbed, or reported lost.

Vehicle-related recoveries were also significant. Police recovered or seized 231 two-wheelers and one four-wheeler, helping return stolen vehicles to their rightful owners and disrupt auto theft networks operating in the district.

Preventive Policing to Ensure Public Safety

As part of preventive measures, police rounded up 1,306 people to ensure peace and prevent any possible offences during the New Year period. These actions were aimed at identifying potential troublemakers and preventing crimes before they occurred.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Hemant Tiwari stated that Operation Aaghat was designed to send a clear message that criminal activity will not be tolerated. He emphasized that maintaining public safety remains the top priority for the force.

Continued Crackdown Planned

The Delhi Police have confirmed that similar special drives will continue in the coming weeks. Officials said sustained enforcement is essential to keep crime under control and maintain public confidence, especially during festive and high-risk periods.

Operation Aaghat reflects a proactive approach to policing, combining enforcement, prevention, and visibility to ensure that residents can celebrate the New Year in a safe and secure environment.

As Delhi prepares to welcome the New Year, the operation stands as a reminder that law enforcement remains vigilant, committed, and prepared to act against criminal activity.
