Smita Parikh Awarded APJ Abdul Kalam Bharat Puraskar for Her Role in Nation-Building and Cultural Advocacy
Mumbai recently awarded renowned author and social activist Smita Parikh the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Bharat Puraskar a noteworthy acknowledgement of her steadfast contributions to Indian literature and her committed social activism. People who exemplify the ideals of nation-building public service and cultural engagement – all of which Dr. Kalam himself promoted during his lifetime – are honored with this award.
Parikh has been an influential voice for justice and literary expression. She is most known for founding Lit O Fest Mumbai. She won the Rajasthan Sahitya Academy Award at the age of 15 marking the beginning of her writing career. Her Main Panth Niharu poetry collection demonstrates her enduring dedication to social consciousness and human emotions.
It’s such an honor to be felicitated with an award by his legacy Parikh said in her heartfelt gratitude after winning. Since I never had the opportunity to meet him in person this award holds great significance for me. Without a doubt I would like to support his foundation in carrying on his legacy.
A Tradition That Still Motivates People
Educationist Sonia Mayers organized the award ceremony which is currently in its fifth edition in collaboration with APJMJ Salim Sheikh, a representative of the House of Kalam and the late President’s grandson. Dr. Kalams vision must be carried forward according to both leaders.
Mayers remarked I have continued this wonderful journey with the family of APJ Kalam Sahab. .And for that reason I have this lovely extended family of the distinguished awardees here today. One day I want to expand it worldwide.
Salim Sheikh continued with pride saying My grandfather Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam the People’s President of India is honored with this award. His words mirrored those of many who still find strength in Kalam’s teachings of humility, service and patriotism.
It is a Patriotic Tribute
A performance of the National Anthem by the Indian Army band was one of the ceremony’s most poignant moments. This powerful musical tribute which was the first to grace the award ceremony reaffirmed Dr. Kalam’s long history of patriotism and national service.
Respecting Legends in All Domains
Legendary Bollywood director Ramesh Sippy and veteran playback singer Udit Narayan were also given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the event in addition to Smita Parikh who was honored for her literary and activist endeavors.
The following were other noteworthy recipients.
- Taufiq Qureshi a well-known percussionist for advancing culture.
- Sameer Wankhede a senior IRS officer with a reputation for honesty.
- Prominent journalist Manish Awasthi.
- Veer Chakra recipient and Kargil war hero Colonel Lalit Rai.
Coll. Rais remarks were a moving reminder of Dr. Kalam’s ongoing impact. As a fauji I commend Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam for his inspirational path. Being here is an honor for me. There aren’t many people in my life that I respect so much and Dr. Kalam is among the most notable.

In addition to being an honor, the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Bharat Puraskar serves as a call to action. It reaffirms the obligation to continue a legacy based on wisdom, morality and compassion for recipients such as Smita Parikh. Dr. Kalam’s spirit is evident in every story told, every life lifted and every action done for the greater good as the voices of literature, film, music journalism, government and military service come together under one roof.
