Two Israeli Embassy Staff Killed in DC Shooting, Trump Reacts

Two Israeli Embassy staff lost their lives in a shooting on Wednesday night, May 21, 2025, while outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington D.C. The incident which shook up the diplomatic community and was not welcomed, happened at an event put on by the American Jewish Committee.

People who witnessed the crime say the victims, a couple who were almost to be engaged, were shot at close range outside the museum. Police say the suspect is Elias Rodriguez, 30, from Chicago and he is now behind bars. People in the area saw Rodriguez outside the museum, then he approached four people and, drawing a handgun, opened fire on them. Next, he entered the museum, where security from the event arrested him. Officials revealed that while in their custody, Rodriguez frequently repeated “Free, free Palestine!”

Kristi Noem confirmed the deaths on Twitter and said investigators are currently trying to find and hold the person responsible accountable. The Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, immediately rejected the attack and described it as a clear case of anti-Semitism, saying that attacks on diplomats and Jews go too far. The FBI is also probing the incident, examining whether terrorism or hate are involved.

President Donald Trump was one of the first to respond to the tragedy, decrying the murders on his social media platform Truth Social: “These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must stop, NOW! Hate and Radicalism, have no home in the USA. Condolences to the families of the victims. So sad that this happens! God Bless You ALL!” He used eloquent words that reflected the collective outrage and sadness across the United States and abroad.

This incident will raise concerns about violence and antisemitism. As researchers continue their work, the police are looking to learn the full circumstance of the attacker’s actions, and after a full investigation will hold the perpetrator accountable. The entire situation serves as a stark reminder for vigilance and protection of people serving diplomatically and communities targeted by hate.

Because the shooting happened close to the Washington Field Office and just under a mile from the U.S. Capitol, people are now even more worried about security in the capital. Those killed in the shooting, who remain unnamed, were present at the Jewish event at the museum, suggesting that the event was the real target.
