Highlighting the incredible achievements of women in 2019
From Greta Thunberg’s becoming the face of the global movement of climate change to women standing up for entry in Sabarimala Temple, 2019 has seen some incredible achievements by and for women. As 2019 comes to an end, we are taking you back to those empowering, inspiring times throughout the year when women totally rocked the world.
1. Female Spacewalk
The first-ever-all-female spacewalk around the International Space Station took place in October 2019. NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch conducted the first-ever all-female spacewalk around the International Space Station (ISS). They had a historic five-and-a-half-hour-long spacewalk where they replaced a battery charge/discharge unit which failed to activate after new lithium-ion-batteries were installed on the space station’s exterior structure.
2. Greta Thunberg
The 16-year-old Greta Thunberg became the face of the global movement for climate change in 2019. The Sweden Activist’s movement started with her skipping school and camping out in front of the Swedish Parliament, demanding strong action against Global Warming and protecting the planet for future generations. She also started a Global Friday Climate Strike which became a great success. Her “How Dare You” speech at the UN Climate Summit in New York became viral on social media.
3 .Shivnagi
2019 marked some historic firsts for women in aviation across the globe. Indian Sub Lieutenant Shivangi, 24, became the first woman pilot in the Indian Navy fulfilling her life-long dream of becoming a pilot.

4. Finland led by women PM
Sanna Marin, 34, became the world’s youngest Prime Minister in Finland. She was sworn in as the head of a coalition government of five parties. All these five parties are headed by women. Sanna Marin is the third woman and youngest Prime Minister in Finnish history.
5. Sabarimala Temple
Supreme Court deferred the verdict of review petitions against its own decision where it allowed women of all ages to enter the Sabarimala temple. 5 million women at the beginning of 2019 lined up across the length of the Southern state of Kerala demanding an end to violent agitations against women trying to enter Kerala’s Sabarimala temple.
