List of Total 75 Ramsar Sites in India

There are a total of 75 Ramsar Sites in India. This number of 75 Ramsar Sites was achieved in the 75th Year of Independence.

Protection of Indian Wetlands: Ramsar Sites in India


In the year 1971, the International Treaty for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Wetlands  was signed in Ramsar, Iran. Since then, the convention has been more commonly called the Ramsar Convention, and the sites protected under it are called Ramsar Sites. There are a total of 75 Ramsar Sites in India, that have been added over the years. 

But, what is the importance of these Ramsar Sites?

The Ramsar Sites are important wetlands that need conservation and protection from the Government. They are of national importance and provide for national and international cooperation regarding its conservation and sustainable use. 

What are the criterias to declare a Ramsar Site?

  1. It  must be a “ rare, or unique example of a natural or near-natural wetland type.”
  2. It should support “vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered species or threatened ecological communities.”
  3. It should support “populations of plant and/or animal species important for maintaining the biological diversity of a particular biogeographic region”
  4. It should support “plant and/or animal species at a critical stage in their life cycles, or provide refuge during adverse conditions.”
  5. It should regularly support “20,000 or more waterbirds.”
  6. It should regularly support “1% of the individuals in a population of one species or subspecies of waterbird.”
  7.  It should support ” a significant proportion of indigenous fish subspecies, species or families, life-history stages, species interactions and/or populations that are representative of wetland benefits and/or values and thereby contributes to global biological diversity.”
  8. It should be “an important source of food for fishes, spawning ground, nursery and/or migration path on which fish stocks, either within the wetland or elsewhere, depend.”
  9. It should regularly support “1% of the individuals in a population of one species or subspecies of wetland-dependent non-avian animal species.”

So, which are the 75 Ramsar Sites in India?

There are a total of 75 Ramsar Sites in India. This number of 75 Ramsar Sites was achieved in the 75th Year of Independence. 

On 13th August 2022, 11 more wetlands were added to the existing list taking the total number to 75 sites. The year 2022 alone had seen an addition of 28 sites and 14 for 2021. 

The maximum sites are in Tamil Nadu- 14 and 10 in Uttar Pradesh.
