The Nobel Prize: Ideas Changing the World

 

‘The Nobel Prize: Ideas Changing the World’ is an exhibition that showcases the work of Alfred Nobel, on whom the Nobel Prize is based on. It also showcases various Nobel Laureates and their work. It emphasises on how the work of the Nobel Prize awardees have shaped and continue to change the world.

 

In actuality Alfred Nobel didn’t provide any instruction as to how the Prize was supposed to be presented. It was decided later that the Prize would be presented on the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel which is 10th of December. The awards are declared in advance but the function and felicitation takes place in the 10th of December itself. The Peace Prize is presented at Oslo, the capital of Norway. All the other prizes are awarded at Stockholm, capital of Sweden. The prizes consist of a medal and a diploma with a cash prize.

 

There are five categories in which the Nobel Prize are awarded:
1. Nobel Peace Prize
2. Nobel Prize in Physics and Chemistry
3. Nobel Prize in Literature
4. Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine
5. Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science

The inscription on the medal reads as “Inventas vitam juvat excoluisse per artes”, which translates to “And they who bettered life on earth by their newly found mastery”.

 

Frederic Passy, co-founder of Inter-Parliamentary Union, and Henry Dunant, founder of International Committee of Red Cross were the first Nobel Laureates.
