Amartya Sen speaks on “Intolerance” Amartya Sen the Nobel Laureate, Bharat Ratna awardee, profound economist and philosopher recently at the India International Centre Auditorium, New Delhi shared his take on the current burning issue intolerance. Interestingly, he told that Indians are becoming too tolerant of intolerance.

Referring to some vegetarian powerful religious groups he commented that children have been hampered from the nourishment of eggs in school meals in some parts of India. His dialogue gave several examples that freedom of speech needs more social support from the government as he believes that the government had not done enough to protect the renowned artist MF Husain, when he was chastised by organized groups. He also expressed regret on India being the first nation to ban Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses.

He made strong and scrutinized comments over the beef issue, whether someone eats beef or pork or not should not be other person’s concern. One eating beef at his home should not be offended by the other person sitting at his home .He asked Indians not to blame the Constitution but it is the government that needs to take the right steps .
