What is Wi-Fi Calling that Airtel is offering to Delhi NCR customers

Know how you can enable Airtel Wi-Fi calling in your phone

Bharti Airtel recently introduced Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) calling, a first for India. Airtel Wi-Fi Calling claims to enhance indoor voice calling experience for smartphone users. This comes days after Bharti Airtel removing its FUP (Fair Usage Policy) on calls to other networks.

What is Wi-Fi Calling?

Wi-Fi calling is aimed to eradicate the call issues people face in indoors of their home, where cellular networks are not strong. This service uses a high-speed internet connection, available via broadband, to make and receive HD (high definition) voice calls. As these calls use Wi-Fi network, users don’t have to pay extra for these calls.

This is not very different from Whatsapp calls or any other over-the-top messaging platform apps which provide calling. Wi-Fi calls are done from one number to another and doesn’t need an app to do so. Call drops are not expected to be a problem as these calls use stable Wi-Fi connections.

Voice over Wi-Fi calling can be configured on compatible smartphones by upgrading operating systems to the latest one that supports Wi-Fi calling. You have to enable Wi-Fi Calling from the settings. Keeping VoLTE switched on will help in a seamless experience of voice calls, although it is not essential to keep it on.

How the service will work?

Airtel Wi-Fi calling

Presently, Wi-Fi service is limited to users of Delhi NCR only whose devices are compatible. There will be no extra charge as it will use Wi-Fi and not Airtel’s Network. But for now, the service is available only for those users who have Wi-Fi on Airtel Xstream Fiber home broadband.

Airtel says it will soon enable Wi-Fi calling on all broadband service providers and Wi-Fi hotspots. Also, it will be rolled out in other major locations too. Reliance Jio is also expected to roll out its own Wi-Fi calling for its customers.
