MCC Clarifies Ashes Controversy regarding a thrilling twist during the fifth and final Ashes Test at Kennington Oval in London. TV umpire Nitin Menon’s ‘not out’ decision for Steve Smith became the centre of a heated debate across social media and in the commentary box. Smith, the former Australia captain, had seemingly been caught short by a stunning throw from substitute fielder George Ealham. The dismissal would have given England a crucial breakthrough on Day 2, with Australia still 85 runs behind and only two wickets remaining.

However, after careful examination of the replay, Menon faced a complex task in determining Smith’s fate. The front angle view revealed that England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow had unsettled the bails before collecting the ball, but the bails only dislodged from the off stump, leaving room for ambiguity. Menon meticulously reviewed the footage frame by frame to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
Ultimately, Menon’s decision declared Smith “not out” when it was revealed that Bairstow had indeed removed one bail before collecting the ball, and at that moment, Smith was short of the crease. However, when the bails were completely dislodged, Smith had managed to make his way back into the crease.
Following the controversial incident, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) issued a clarification via Twitter, referring to Law 29.1 of cricket, which states that the wicket is broken when at least one bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps. The MCC’s Official Interpretation of the Laws of Cricket further added that a bail is considered removed at the moment when both ends of it leave their grooves.

Despite the contentious decision, Smith remained at the crease and went on to complete his half-century. He played a vital role in guiding Australia beyond England’s first-innings total, giving the visitors a slender lead of 12 runs at the close of Day 2, with Australia being bowled out for 295.
