Good News for RCB Fans as IPL Likely to Continue at Chinnaswamy Stadium After Karnataka Govt Nod

Good news for RCB fans as IPL is likely to continue at Chinnaswamy Stadium after Karnataka govt grants conditional approval.

Good News for RCB Fans: IPL Set to Continue at Chinnaswamy Stadium as Karnataka Government Grants Conditional Approval

The Karnataka Cabinet has given conditional approval allowing the Karnataka State Cricket Association to continue hosting international matches and IPL fixtures at Bengaluru’s iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The decision comes as welcome news for RCB fans, who were uncertain about the venue’s future following safety concerns earlier this year. The approval, however, is subject to strict compliance with all prescribed safety and security norms laid down by the state government.

Safety Conditions Linked to June 4 Stampede Probe

Justice Cunha Commission Recommendations Mandatory

The clearance has been granted with a firm directive that KSCA must fully implement the recommendations of the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission. The commission was appointed to investigate the tragic June 4 stampede outside the stadium that claimed 11 lives. The incident occurred during massive celebrations after RCB secured their maiden IPL title, when a victory parade drew thousands of fans to the venue despite inadequate crowd-control arrangements.

Stadium Design Flagged as Unsafe

According to the commission’s findings, the current structural layout of the Chinnaswamy Stadium was deemed unsuitable and unsafe for large public gatherings. The report highlighted critical flaws in infrastructure planning and crowd movement. Key recommendations included the creation of sufficient entry and exit gates, dedicated queuing and circulation zones away from public roads, internationally compliant emergency evacuation plans, and improved parking facilities to prevent congestion.

Loss of Major Cricketing Events After Safety Concerns

Due to these safety lapses, the stadium had earlier lost hosting rights for several high-profile tournaments. These included matches scheduled during the 2025 Women’s World Cup, the 2026 men’s T20 World Cup, and fixtures of the Women’s Premier League. The uncertainty raised concerns over whether IPL matches would continue at Chinnaswamy Stadium, especially considering the venue’s central role in Bengaluru’s sporting identity.

Karnataka Govt Reassures Fans and Cricket Authorities

State Aims to Protect Bengaluru’s Image

Following a meeting with newly elected KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad and other office-bearers, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar clarified that the state government does not intend to stop cricket at the iconic ground. He stated that the decision to allow IPL matches to continue at Chinnaswamy Stadium was taken to protect the city’s global image as a major sporting hub.

Additional Reviews and Police Coordination Planned

Shivakumar confirmed that precautionary measures have been put in place to prevent any recurrence of past incidents. He added that the Home Minister will hold further discussions with KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad and senior police officials to ensure security readiness. The government has emphasised that future permissions will depend entirely on compliance with safety upgrades.

What This Means for IPL and RCB Home Matches

The IPL follows a home-and-away format, where each franchise hosts seven group-stage matches. For RCB, continuing at Chinnaswamy Stadium is crucial, as the venue has long been their fortress and a favourite among fans. Additionally, league tradition often allows the defending champions to host the final of the following season, making the stadium’s availability even more significant.

Matches Resume Cautiously Ahead of IPL 2025

Recently, Chinnaswamy Stadium has resumed hosting low-level cricket matches behind closed doors as authorities assess safety preparedness. It remains unclear whether the IPL governing body will conduct independent inspections or accept the Karnataka government’s clearance. With the IPL 2025 season scheduled to begin in March–April, all eyes will be on whether the recommended safety measures are implemented in time.
