IND vs SA 2nd ODI: Kohli and Gaikwad Smash Centuries in Dominant 195-Run Partnership
Kohli–Gaikwad Centuries Set Up India’s Commanding Total in Raipur
Centuries Partnership Creates Records in High-Scoring ODI Clash
The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur witnessed a batting masterclass on Wednesday as centuries from Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad powered India to a commanding 358/5 in the second ODI against South Africa.
Gaikwad’s Maiden ODI Century Sets the Tone
Ruturaj Gaikwad showcased remarkable confidence and control, especially against spin. After reaching his fifty in 52 balls, he accelerated brilliantly to score his first-ever ODI century in just 77 deliveries. He finished with a superb 105 off 83 balls, striking boundaries through clever footwork, sweeps, and well-timed drives.
His assault included taking on Keshav Maharaj for two fours and a six in one over, followed by a flurry of strokes against Corbin Bosch. Gaikwad’s composure against Marco Jansen’s short-pitched tactics was equally impressive, responding with counter-attacking boundaries including a top-edged six over long leg.
Kohli Continues His Dream Run
Virat Kohli was at his fluent best, continuing his red-hot form from Ranchi. He brought up his half-century off 47 balls and converted it into a majestic 102 off 93 deliveries, marking his second consecutive century of the series. His knock featured seven classy fours and two sixes, highlighted by his trademark wristy flick, a powerful pull off Ngidi, and a straight drive that nearly collided with Gaikwad.
This hundred took Kohli’s tally to 53 ODI centuries and 84 international tons, further strengthening his legendary status. He also achieved back-to-back ODI hundreds for the 11th time in his career, celebrating with his iconic leap and skyward glance. His innings eventually ended when Ngidi outsmarted him with a slower ball, leading to a catch at long-on.
Early Setbacks Before the Kohli-Gaikwad Comeback
Inserted to bat first, India had a shaky start. Openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal faced swing and inconsistency from South Africa’s seamers. Lungi Ngidi sprayed wides early, while Nandre Burger conceded 14 in his first over.
Rohit attempted to dominate but edged behind for 14 off Burger, while Jaiswal struggled for timing and mistimed a pull off Jansen for 22. The Raipur crowd erupted when Kohli arrived, pulling Ngidi for six and immediately shifting momentum back in India’s favor.

Rahul’s Fiery Finish and Jadeja’s Steady Support
After Kohli and Gaikwad’s marathon partnership, skipper KL Rahul delivered the finishing touches with an explosive knock. He smashed an unbeaten 66 off 43 balls, bringing up his half-century in just 33 deliveries.
Rahul’s innings included powerful pulls, lofted shots, scoops, and sweeps. He received a lifeline on 44 when Matthew Breetzke dropped a simple chance—a moment that could cost South Africa dearly.
Ravindra Jadeja provided valuable support with an unbeaten 24, adding 69 runs for the sixth wicket with Rahul. The duo hammered 18 runs in the final over, ensuring India crossed the 350-run mark.
