Behind Lucknow’s Ekana World Cup stadium, a wetland thrives as a haven for diverse bird species, hosting an avian ‘world cup’ with the arrival of migratory birds. While the stadium basks in cricket glory, the wetland, now protected, attracts foreigners of the winged variety. Thousands of Barn Swallows grace the Ekana sky, heralding winter’s arrival. These agile birds, breeding in Northern latitudes, migrate to India, showcasing mesmerizing flight patterns.

Near the Ekana Wetland, a cacophony unfolds as wagtails, both white-faced and black-faced, engage in lively antics. With tails twerking, these vocal immigrants showcase their exuberance, establishing a temporary avian dominance. The wetland, soon to feature a watchtower and walkway, becomes a lively stage for their performances.

Twilight’s Avian Symphony at Ekana

Venturing towards the stadium, a thicket houses diverse water birds, including the Purple Swamphen and jacanas with their miraculous water-walking skills. The wetland’s symphony, from croaking egrets to laughing water hens, creates a unique auditory experience. As dusk falls, Ekana transforms into a ghost town, revealing the skeletal remains of babool trees offering ideal perches for birds.

Among the avian residents are Indian rollers, captivating with their turquoise and sapphire-tinted wings. Known as the farmer’s ally for insect control, the roller’s acrobatic hunting methods bring delight to observers. In Northern India, it’s fondly called Neelkanth, associated with auspicious sightings on Dusshera.
