NASA lost communication with International Space Station due to power outage

A NASA power outage disrupted communication with the International Space Station on Tuesday.

Mission Control was not able to connect with the seven astronauts in orbit and was not able to send  messages to the station. Houston’s Johnson Space Center was out of power as upgrade work was underway in the building.

Joel Montalbano, the Space station program manager, said that it took over 90 minutes to backup control systems and neither the astronauts nor the station were in any danger . The crew was informed of the problem through Russian communication systems, within 20 minutes of the outage.

According to Montalbano, it was the first time in history that Nasa had the need to use these backup systems to take control. He stated Nasa was hoping to solve the problem and be back to ordinary operations by the end of the day.

In the event of a catastrophe requiring evacuations, Nasa uses a backup control center miles from Houston. However, in Tuesday’s case, the flight controllers stayed at assignment manipulation for the reason that lighting fixtures and air-conditioning nevertheless worked.
