Delhi High Court orders to get the work done, irrespective of government

Indicating the failure of the Delhi government and also the municipal corporations to take steps in order to clean drains and further prevent waterlogging, the Delhi High Court, on Thursday warned of contempt of court action against the senior government officials if the work was not completed in accordance with the rules.

The bench comprising of Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed and Justice Ashutosh Kumar decided to issue orders “directly to the officials” after the Delhi government standing counsel Rahul Mehra has argued that senior bureaucrats in the city has been “not under the control” of the AAP government, and files moved for work were further stalled due to the dispute over the power sharing between the government and the Lieutenant Governor.

“We are not concerned about who government is and who is not,” said the bench, which had directed the chief secretary of Delhi to take appropriate steps to pay the compensation to the family of an 8-year-old boy who died after falling into an open sewer in the Shakurpur area earlier this year.
