Retinol vs Tretinoin

These are two different products and not be confused as the same.

Tretinoin is a synthetic version of vitamin A, whereas Retinol is a natural form of vitamin A. Tretinoin is stronger than retinol and is only available with a prescription. While Retinol is less irritating to sensitive skin, Tretinoin might not suit sensitive skin.

How does Tretinoin work?

Here is how Tretinoin works and is being called a miracle cure:

  1. Tretinoin promotes skin cell turnover and quickly replaces skin cells.
  2. It prevents the accumulation of dead skin cells and promotes exfoliation, it helps to keep pores clear and less prone to becoming blocked.
  3. It has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce redness and inflammation caused by acne.
  4. Tretinoin stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that contributes to the structural integrity of the skin.

While Tretinoin seems to have a lot of benefits, it also has side effects that we should be careful about.

  • It does not suit all skin types and can irritate the skin, dryness and redness.
  • It might cause a stinging or burning sensation when applied.
  • It can cause the outer layer of the skin to peel.

What do dermatologists say?

Dermatologists believe that Tretinoin is a good medicine for acne. They often recommend it to their patients and say that it is “scientifically proven” to work.

Caution: Please seek your doctor’s advice before using any product on your skin.
