Rare Blooming Flowers Mesmerize Nature Lovers With Their Stunning, Fleeting Beauty

Amid the wide sea of floristic beauty–the plant-world,–there are rare flowers which are treasured more than a marvel of beauty, even than such a marvel; they are treasured because of their albeit exorbitant planetary rarity. These are the “monocarpic” plants,–the varieties that bloom and bear seed, and then in this their one act of breeding have finished their moment, and as the life-blood is drained out of their veins, gracefully expire. To be able to see something like this is a gift, a quick peek into the most dramatic and committed processes of life in nature.

Century Plant (Agave americana)

Among some of the most common examples of a monocarpic plant, we can mention Century Plant (Agave americana). Although it has a very appealing name, this glamorous succulent does not flower once in every century, but rather once in every 10 to 30 years according to environmental factors. The Agave takes decades to mature, growing a spectacular rosette of thick spiky leaves, storing energy as it goes. And then with an apparent overnight spring a giant stalk of a flower appears, often as tall as thirty feet or more thickly covered with masses of yellow or green flowers. It is a dazzling show that in many respects is well worth the journey even by the pollinators that can bring in long distances especially when the plant has already finished its fantastic swansong and has devoted all other efforts towards producing seeds and finally dies.

Talipot Palm (Corypha umbraculifera)

A second monocarpic giant that is awe inspiring is the Talipot Palm (Corypha umbraculifera) native to select regions of India and Sri Lanka. This is among the biggest palms globally and can grow up to 80 feet. It has a growth of 30 to 80 years. then in its last great effort it gives off the biggest inflorescence of any terrestrial plant, a giant branched stem which grows out of the top of the tree, covered with cream-coloured flowers by millions. Dazzling blossom, which goes on through a whole year, till the fruits are ripe, wears the palm out at the height of its splendor, and brings it to its crowning death.

Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum)

While certainly not formed as “once in a lifetime” for a single flower; it is another captivating example of a unique flowering phenomenon, the Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum), or Titan Arum. Although the plant is perennial, its enormous, foul-smelling inflorescence, the largest unbranched one in the world, blooms only once every few years, usually after 10 years of vegetative (growing) time. It provides an odor of rotting flesh when in bloom, the smell is a significant attractant to its specific pollinators. The bloom hardly lasts more than 24 to 48 hours – and seeing it in bloom is brief, indeed.

Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana)

And then there is the extraordinary Neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana), a blue-purple flower that comes alive carpet rug style over the hills of the Western Ghats in Southern India every 12 years. This synchronized mass blooming event completely changes a landscape into a beautiful sea of color, attracting tourists and nature seekers from around the world. While the individual plant does not die after flowering, the simultaneous massive flowering event is so rare, that it provides the feeling of “once in a lifetime” for those lucky enough to witness it.
