Background of National Junk Food Day
Upon investigating the origins of this food-filled day we were unable to locate any information. It sounds like a great idea to me and it was probably created by a diet-conscious person or group who wanted to eat junk food guilt-free at least once a year.
It needs a congressional act to become a national day. In any case I have no problem celebrating.
However, what about junk food? When did it first enter our lives? Well it began around the late 1900s when packaged foods became popular. Naturally, cooking at home remained the norm for many years. But junk food really took off after World War II.
Fast food restaurants and the frozen food section took off as a result of people traveling more and eating out more.
People could choose from a wide variety of foods. However junk food did not begin to gain a negative reputation until the 1970s.
It was at this point that the phrase was actually created by microbiologist Michael Jacobson. His goal was to try and reduce our diets’ alarmingly high intake of foods high in sugar, salt and preservatives.
Since then more people have learned about junk food and many food manufacturers have attempted to create healthier versions of the foods we love most!
