Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis’s Los Angeles Farmhouse

A rustic-modern farmhouse by Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis in Los Angeles blends solar power, reclaimed materials, and refined interiors.

Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis Transform a Barn into a Sustainable Los Angeles Farmhouse

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’s Los Angeles farmhouse is far more than a showpiece—it’s a deeply personal sanctuary, thoughtfully crafted with sustainability, functionality, and serenity at its core. Perched atop a hill in L.A., the six-acre property they call KuKu Farms encompasses a main house, an entertainment barn, and a freestanding barbecue pavilion—each positioned with precision to frame stunning views through and between the buildings.

They envisioned “a home, not an estate”—a structure that appears to have aged gracefully over decades, yet remains grounded in a sleek, modern sensibility. Architect Howard Backen led the transformation, masterfully blending reclaimed wood, board-form concrete, and generous expanses of glass to strike a balance between timeworn charm and contemporary elegance.

Central to the design was sustainability. The house is entirely powered by concealed photovoltaics, producing more energy than the property consumes. Kutcher and Kunis even dug a well for land irrigation and began planting corn during the pandemic lockdown, underscoring their commitment to regenerative farming.

For the interiors, they turned to Vicky Charles of Charles & Co., bringing a refined, contemporary warmth to the farmhouse aesthetic. The open-plan spaces are filled with earthy tones, plush seating, and custom pieces—most notably a grand crystal chandelier and silver throne-style chairs from their personal collection—fitted thoughtfully into the rustic architecture. “We thought it would be funny to have this incredibly opulent thing hanging in a barn,” Kunis quipped.

Their creative process was methodical, personal, and collaborative. After mapping out Pinterest boards individually, they discovered huge overlap in design preferences—90% of their selected inspirations aligned, with many of the pinned houses designed by Howard Backen. The couple remained deeply involved through the full five-year journey, discussing everything from beam dimensions to material transitions with unwavering dedication.

The finished Los Angeles farmhouse blends architecture, design, and sustainability into a home that radiates tranquility. As Kutcher puts it: “To feel tranquility in a space, everything needs to be in order … When we’re in our home, the world just makes sense.”
