Won’t Change Reality: India Strongly Condemns China’s Arunachal Name Play

The most recent episode of disengagement from China sheds light on the ongoing challenges to the India-China relationship, especially relative to the borders.

India Slams China’s Arunachal Renaming: Reality Unchanged, Sovereignty Firm

India has not taken the repeated attempts made by China to rename them in the state of Arunachal Pradesh lightly and has strongly condemned the actions and made it clear that labeling them in different forms will not change the “undeniable reality” that state is not a separate entity but an integral, inalienable aspect of India. This hard stand arises in the wake of Beijing’s continued use of granting Chinese names to areas in the north-eastern Indian state, a country which China lays claims as “southern Tibet”.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made a statement on the unremitting and principled rejection of such renaming attempts by India. He called these actions of China “vain and preposterous” to correspond that “creative naming will not alter the undeniable reality that Arunachal Pradesh was, is, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India”.
The practice of China of changing the names of places in Arunachal Pradesh is several years old and there have been several such lists. These actions are largely seen as a move to support China’s territorial claims of the area. India has always rejected these allegations and claimed its sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh, which has been the part of India since 1947 and became a full-fledged state in 1987.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had earlier dealt with this issue when he had said that changing a name does not alter the ownership. He confirmed that Arunachal Pradesh “was, is, and will always be a state of India”, and such “senseless” acts, if repeated time and again, would never change this basic reality.
India’s firm reaction is a clear demonstration of its firm determination to keep its territorial integrity and sovereignty. The government has kept emphasizing that the Chinese efforts to try to apply invented names to places in the state of Arunachal Pradesh are groundless and can have no effect on the ground reality. Strong language of the MEA speaks volumes about the Indian firm stand against any unilateral move to alter the position of things in the region.

The most recent episode of disengagement from China sheds light on the ongoing challenges to the India-China relationship, especially relative to the borders. While we still have reliable diplomatic and military channels for communication, China reminds us of the ongoing gaps between both sides and the need for both countries to engage with a view to work collaboratively for peace and stability in the region. India’s clear and continuous communication regarding Arunachal Pradesh reinforces its sovereign rights and signals that it cannot be influenced by China’s renaming exercise.
