Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul: Ideal India Test Captain?
Indian Test Captain ideal candidate for will need sustained Test success, a strong missing tactical mind, a respected voice in the dressing room
India Test Captain: Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, or KL Rahul?
Since Rohit Sharma is about to conclude his Test captaincy and Virat Kohli stepped down, who will lead the team in Tests is still being debated. Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul are all interested, as each has different strong and weak areas.
Shubman Gill:
A lot of people think Gill will become a key player and perhaps the team captain in time. He has been prepared to lead, serving as vice-captain in short-format cricket. Being calm, knowing the game well and being easy to communicate with are strengths that both teammates and coaches respect in him. Gill has demonstrated extraordinary talent as a batsman in his games in India. Steyn’s Test record sees him averaging 35.05. His place in the Test team, though, seems less certain far from home, where his average is 29.50. Making him captain now could burden him, as he hasn’t yet become a good batter in every kind of cricket game. Although he hasn’t captained India much in Tests, he has taken charge of Gujarat Titans in the IPL and India in T20I matches.
Rishabh Pant:
No one doubts that Pant is a key factor in India’s wins, thanks to his thrilling style of batting and turning defeats around. His work behind the stumps adds something more and he is actively involved in choosing how to play. Most of his Test cricket impact was built from his amazing average of 42.11, coming from impressive performances overseas. Though Pant has led Delhi Capitals in the IPL, his attitude under pressure is sometimes questioned. Many people are unsure about Pant considering captaincy in Tests due to him being injured lately and lacking experience guiding a team overseas.
KL Rahul:
KL Rahul has already been the captain of the Indian side in Tests but with a small number of matches (3 games, 2 victories, 1 defeat). His record with the bat in the Test format is an average of 33.58. He is quite cool-tempered and has been a leader in many sports.
He’s a resourceful batsman who can open or bat in the middle order, giving some flexibility. Like Gill, Rahul has sometimes struggled for consistency in Test cricket, especially outside of India. While he has led well in white-ball cricket, Test performance over the longer term and injury history might all weigh in against his appointment. Recent reports suggest he is not among the leading candidates at this stage.
Conclusion:
The ideal candidate will need sustained Test success, a strong missing tactical mind, a respected voice in the dressing room.
* Gill represents someone for the future – a long-term investment, but he may need time to not only grow into his place but game as well.
* Pant represents an aggressive instinctive match-winner, but his level of fitness and rebuild needs to be factored in.
* Rahul represents experience and calmness – but there are questions on overall batting consistency.

In this context, the BCCI might be making a slow, sensible transition. While Gill is being prepared for the future, an older player may provide more consistency and stability. Jasprit Bumrah was also mentioned as a likely short-term appointment due to his vice-captaincy, and good leadership in his short captaincy stint.
