Shubhanshu Shukla and Axiom-4 Crew Return Safely After 18-Day Space Mission and 60+ Experiments

At precisely 3 p. m. IST on Tuesday July 15 the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft carrying Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and three other members of the Axion-4 mission crew made a splashdown landing off the coast of California USA.

Around 4:50 p. m. IST on Monday the spacecraft undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) after a journey of about 22 and a half hours. The team carried out at least 60 experiments during their 18-day stay.

Grace, an Ax-4 spacecraft piloted by Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) made a splashdown landing in the Pacific Ocean according to NASA.

After that they were transported by helicopter and they will now spend a few days readjusting to their surroundings.

The landing of US astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore who are of Indian descent in March following a nine-month stay on the ISS is comparable to this. Their Freedom SpaceX capsule touched down in the Atlantic Ocean close to the Florida coast.

SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, completed its 18th crewed spaceflight with Axiom-4 in 2020. This project expands on Axiom’s nine-year-old business of launching astronauts into low-Earth orbit under the sponsorship of private organizations and foreign governments.

Axiom is also one of the few businesses creating a commercial space station of its own that will eventually take the place of the International Space Station (ISS) which NASA anticipates retiring in 2030.
