School Collapse in Rajasthan: Four children killed, 60 trapped, school crumbling down.
Friday morning turned out to be a heart-wrenching tragedy in Jhalawar in Rajasthan as children were trapped up in the building roof collapsed in a government primary school. At least four children succumbed to the tragic incident and more than 60 children remained buried under the deluge of collapsed roof tiles. The accident, which took place at the Piplodi Primary School as classes were going on has created a huge rescue mission and posed a serious question in the structural stability of old institutions in the area.

According to eyewitnesses and early reports, the reports show that the then one-story building, in a rather poor state, collapsed at around 8.30 AM. The surprise gave rise to panic in the society, where worried parents and local dwellers thronged the locality to help in the rescue missions. Police, local authorities and rescue teams raced to reach the location and tried to their level best to rescue the children trapped under the debris. The debris was cleared with the help of cranes and other equipment of a heavy nature, whereas the medical teams had provided help to the injured people.

Superintendent of Police, Jhalawar, Amit Kumar, confirmed the death of four children and declared that at least 17 others had been injured. A hospital in Jhalawar received ten injured children with most of them in critical condition although the number of those in a serious condition was reported to be three and four. The synergistic efforts of the teachers, local residents and rescue work force has resulted in removal of a large number of children out of the rubble thus reflecting the on the spot community aftermath of the activity.

The event has sparked widespread condolences. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed his sadness while stating that necessary arrangements will be made to treat the injured children. He promised a high-level inquiry to ascertain the precise reasons for the building collapse and to hold someone accountable. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also expressed sadness over this tragic event.

This horrible collapse has underlined the need for urgent and proper checks on public infrastructure, especially school buildings, not only throughout the state of Rajasthan but also throughout the country. Reports indicate that complaints about the state of the Piplodi school building had been raised in the past, making the event even worse.
