PM Modi Gets Warm UK Welcome, Signs Long-Awaited Free Trade Agreement
Narendra Modi was accorded a very hot welcome by the Indian diaspora when he landed in London which is the first leg of his two countries visit in London and Maldives. This intense interest stressed the cultural and emotional bond that existed between the Indian community in the UK and the remainder of India and their leaders.
A festive audience of the Indian community members who came to meet PM Modi received him with “Modi, Modi” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” slogans and also with Vande Mataram. Most of them wore the traditional Indian clothes, and the artists played dhols and others held the posters, which created a sort of electrifying environment. The Prime Minister went to social media, where he happily stated that he was grateful to receive such a warm welcome by the Indian community in the UK. Their love and patriotism to the development of India is very encouraging.”
The main agenda of the two-day visit of PM Modi in UK (July 23-24) is to cement the India-UK Comprehensive strategic Partnership, since the major event of today is signing the long-expected Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on July 24, 2025 with the UK. It is the landmark accord that ended negotiations on May 6 after three years of the talks and is likely to have a rather positive impact on bilateral trade in both of the states in the hope to increase the current amount of bilateral trade between the two nations to an estimated potential of doubling their current bilateral trade of $60 billion to $120 billion by 2030.
With the FTA, the Indian exports are likely to enjoy duty-free market access of their products in UK although this is to be extended to almost 99 per cent of the exports of India, which include labour-intensive products, textiles, leather, footwear, and apparel. On the contrary, the accord will also lower tariffs to allow cheaper importation of British products such as whisky and cars to the Indian market. The agreement also involves the services, innovation, government procurement and the intellectual property rights, the further indication of a comprehensive economic partnership.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has been travelling with the Prime Minister for the formal signing.
During his visit, PM Modi will have extensive discussions with his British counterpart, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, across several important issues such as defence, climate change, technology, innovation, education and people-to-people ties. The prime minister will also get an audience with King Charles III. The discussions will likely also include regional and global developments of mutual interest and the very important issue of Indian fugitives who are in the UK and their extradition.
