Jaishankar: Pahalgam Attack Aims to Incite Fear, Religious Divide

S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs, stated that the terror attack on a group of 26 tourists in Pahalgam was not random, but targeted by terrorists to “create a fear psychosis” and an atmosphere of “religious discord” in Jammu and Kashmir. Jaishankar pointed out that the tourists were victimized based on their faith and that the targeted use of terror attacked the tourism and communal peace of Kashmir. Jaishankar indicated that the terrorists are not acting alone, a position he attributed to the military leadership in Pakistan, while asserting India’s resolve towards stopping cross border terrorism and asserting its right to revenge. The minister has confirmed with certainty that the attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir was meant to frighten people and stir up religious strife.

India has strongly condemned the attack which left 26 people dead, most of them Hindu and has made clear how terrorists use these actions to harm people from different countries.

During an interview with global journalists, Jaishankar said the attack was carefully planned to disrupt the region and hurt its tourism economy which has given Kashmir hope for recovery. Terrorists killed people who were part of their faith community which he noted reveals their aim to manipulate local religions and threaten unity in the valley.

He also brought into the discussion Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir and linked the attack to his extreme religious views. He pointed out that the brutal murder of tourists at Pahalgam was tied to the ideological views of Pakistan’s military leaders. This means it is up to Pakistan’s official system to ensure such terrorism never occurs.

The External Affairs Minister made it clear that terrorism is not just a byproduct of the Kashmir dispute, but an entirely unacceptable crime on its own to India. He stressed that India considers Jammu and Kashmir as an essential part of its land and said any talks about Kashmir would only focus on the restoration of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
India’s foreign minister underlined that the country has no tolerance for terrorism and would not be bullied by anyone through nuclear threats.

He affirmed India’s right to self-defense and its determination to “hit the terrorists where they are” when faced with continued terrorist threats. This powerful statement shows India’s seriousness about acting against terrorism emanating from across the border, no matter where it originates.

The Pahalgam attack has raised fresh concern about the return of religiously motivated terrorism in Kashmir, with the possibility of outside actors fueling it also raised. Jaishankar’s no-nonsense comments serve as a clear signal to the world community about the real and abiding nature of this terrorism, which seeks not just to kill, but to divide societies and instill fear but highlights India’s determination to fight it and protect its citizens’ safety and security.
