Isha Ambani Shines In Bandhani Gown, Celebrates Indian Craftsmanship Boldly

Isha Ambani, the famous representative in the world of fashion, an avid supporter of Indian arts and crafts once again got into the spotlight due to her support of Indian craftsmanship in the most spectacular manner. Recently, she attended one of the appointments in the magnificent Bandhani outfit, a custom-made fashion by a famous Italian high-end brand Roberto Cavalli. This one of a kind association was a strong proof of the perfect amalgamation of the Indian culture with the cameo of global white dressmaking.

The gown was not an ordinary designer creation because of its bright pink color and sleeveless style. And it was the end result of several months of painstaking labor, created by hand, in the traditional Bandhani process. This is an old fashioned way of tie-dye, and is very popular in Kutch, Gujarat where one has to tie very small knots on cloth and then were left to make a pattern on which dyeing is done. The effect is a three dimensional surface which is captivating and culturally congruent. It is also notable that the fabric was designed by local artisans of Kutch, which shows Isha Ambani is always trying to give an international platform to the various and everlasting crafts of India.
Discussing the finer details of the partnership Anaita Shroff Adajania, a celebrity stylist stated, the gown was a subtle amalgamation of “Indian craftsmanship and Italian couture.”

The design, created by Roberto Cavalli’s creative director Fausto Puglisi, is said to be inspired by Cavalli’s collaboration with Vogue India for “Project Renaissance” in 2012, and only extends this brand’s long history of celebrating the craftsmanship of India.

Even before her engagement, Isha Ambani, has the power to amplify the artisans of India with platforms like Swadesh, Reliance Retail’s handicrafts brand, and the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in order to return traditional Indian arts to sustainable lives of artisans, and elevate Indian crafts to wider, international audiences. Isha Ambani’s design choices have also echoed that commitment — wedging Indian traditional between India’s diaspora and global design in its widest scope.

The Bandhani gown by Roberto Cavalli embodies all that. It is both a jewel and a showcase of Bandhani itself (another rare traditional textile art style), in addition to showcasing the ways Indian craft-making traditions can continue to evolve into contemporary silhouettes and high fashion. In wearing such a unique piece, Ambani bridges a gap between the significance of Indian historic craft-making traditions with contemporary global luxury, and signals appreciation for her historic connection to design in India and a drive for innovation for others. In addition to highlighting Isha Ambani’s personal objectives, this collaboration is also a way to direct attention to the latent potential of Indian crafts.
