Indian Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Set To Undock From ISS Today

The pioneering Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will today begin his journey on route to Earth just after the successful launch of his mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). He is due to be undocked by Shukla, who was a pilot on the Axiom-4 (Ax-4) mission, at around 4:35 PM IST on Monday, July 14, 2025, and the estimated splashdown time is around 3:00 PM IST the following day (Tuesday July 15) off the coast of California.

The 18 days spent on the ISS by Shubhanshu Shukla has been a huge milestone on his space dreams since he is the first Indian to visit the orbiting laboratory and only the second Indian to have explored space apart form Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma who was the first Indian to visit the space in 1984. His role on Ax-4 mission, a joint venture of Axiom Space, NASA and SpaceX can be viewed as a significant preparation on the way to the future Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission by India.

In his time within the ISS, Shukla actively participated in carrying out more than 60 of the most sophisticated scientific experiments many of which were specially designed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). These tests were in a vast variety of disciplines that embodied human health, materials science, and space agriculture.

Most prominent of the experiments were observations on tardigrade survival and reproduction in microgravity, on the impact of the space environment on human muscle cell development (myogenesis), and on the sprouting of methi and moong seeds, of relevance to in-orbit nutrition. He also took part in the studies of microalgae and its use to provide oxygen and food, as well as evaluating glucose monitors to be worn by astronauts with a medical disorder.

During a heartfelt farewell ceremony on Sunday, Shubhanshu Shukla gave an emotional speech that channeled the legendary words spoken by Rakesh Sharma during his mission in 1984: “Aaj ka Bharat abhi bhi saare jahaan se achha dikhta hai” (Today’s India still looks more beautiful than the entire world). He thanked ISRO, NASA, Axiom Space, SpaceX, and all other international partners who collaborated to bring his mission to fruition.

When he returns home, Shukla will enter a roughly seven-day rehabilitation program that will help him readjust to Earth’s gravity, with guidance and supervision from flight surgeons. His family from Lucknow is anxiously awaiting the time when he returns home safely, as they will be offering prayers for his successful landing. Shubhanshu Shukla’s mission will undoubtedly provide a treasure trove of scientific data and also reinforce India’s strong position in human space exploration while inspiring a whole new generation to look up towards the stars.
