India Test Squad Announcement: Gill Captain, Pant Vice-Captain for England Tour?
A lot of guessing about who will make the Test squad for India’s tour to England in June-August 2025 is taking place among fans and experts. Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Tests and Virat Kohli giving up the format has put the question of who will take over Indian Test leadership front and center. One name that has been linked strongly with the captaincy is young batting star Shubman Gill, with Rishabh Pant in place to be his vice-captain.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to reveal the squad shortly, so who is chosen as captain and vice-captain will be watched closely. Shubman Gill, a possible future leader in all formats, has recently earned more captaincy recognition by lifting Gujarat Titans into the IPL 2025 playoffs. India does not have a Test captaincy ace up their sleeve, but he has led the team in T20Is and is known for being calm and strategic in the IPL. Bumrah and Gill seems like the best pick for captain and vice-captain, says MSK Prasad, as Gill can learn how to lead while playing with the national team.
Many people point to Rishabh Pant as a strong option for vice-captaincy. Even though Virat’s batting in IPL 2025 was tough, his Test performance overseas is truly exceptional. He has proven himself with six centuries in Test matches, four coming when challenging SENA teams including an 89* that sealed the win at Gabba. Because of his intense style and swift changes of momentum, he is highly respected on the field. Certain ex-captains and commentators see him as suited to stand in as vice-captain because of his age and Test experience.
India’s forthcoming five-match Test series vs. England marks the start of the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle (2025-27). This is an important tour because it sets the tone for the team’s new leadership and team environment. Earlier today, India announced an India A squad which will tour England before the senior side arrive, playing few first-class matches including an intra-squad match against the senior team. Specifically, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan will be playing in the India A squad before the second match, thereby giving them some much-needed exposure to red-ball cricket in England.
The selection committee has an enormous task of not only selecting the captain and vice-captain, but also selecting a team which includes both experience and young talent if they are to compete in England’s conditions. The squad is likely to have a mixture of experienced players and younger players, with the experience and potential of players in the current IPL and the recent Australian domestic red-ball competitions, will play a part in helping the selectors decide.

The England tour will be a true trial-by-fire for the new leadership, and the outcomes will give them a clear picture of where the team is at and how they should view the future of Test cricket for India.
