Congress Turns on Shashi Tharoor Over His Praise for Modi’s Anti-Terror Stand Overseas
Shashi Tharoor Lauded Internationally, Slammed by Congress for Backing Modi Abroad
Congress leader Udit Raj sharply criticized party Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor within the party calling him the super spokesperson of the BJP for constantly defending Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government.
In an effort to rally support for its counterterrorism strategy after Operation Sindoor the Indian government sent a number of multi-party parliamentary delegations to international capitals. One notable delegation headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was sent to explain India’s precise and calibrated response to cross-border terrorism.
In order to present a unified Indian front against terrorism and national security threats Shashi Tharoor’s delegation which includes MPs from a variety of political parties including the BJP JMM TDP and Shiv Sena has visited the US Guyana and Panama. While there they have interacted with lawmakers, think tanks, the media and the diaspora.
Udit Raj blasted the senior party leader saying Shashi Tharoor is speaking in favor of PM Modi and the government, something the BJP leaders are not saying. He also criticized the central government led by Prime Minister Modi for taking credit for the Indian Armed Forces and questioned Shashi Tharoor’s comprehension of the contributions made by earlier administrations.
According to sources the Congress party leadership is seemingly supporting Udit Raj’s criticism of Shashi Tharoor by contesting her claim that India had never crossed the Line of Control prior to the 2016 Uri surgical strike. Congress reportedly wants to know why Tharoor would say something that seems to ignore the policies of past Congress-led administrations.

Congress did not Select Shashi Tharoor to Represent India Abroad
The list included former Cabinet Minister Anand Sharma, Deputy Leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain and Lok Sabha MP Raja Brar. The Center requested that the Congress party suggest four names for inclusion in the delegations being sent overseas to convey India’s position on terrorism originating from Pakistan.
Shashi Tharoor’s name was nevertheless declared by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs while the BJP characterized the Congress recommendations as questionable. The Congress party’s selections for representing India at diplomatic gatherings are not only intriguing but highly dubious according to BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya on X (formerly Twitter).

Pakistan’s terrorism in Panama is denounced by Shashi Tharoor
Shashi Tharoor vehemently denounced Pakistan for its ongoing terrorist attacks against India claiming that a dramatic change in recent years has made terrorists realize they will be held accountable.
What has changed in recent years is that the terrorists have also realized they will have a price to pay on that let there be no doubt stressed Shashi Tharoor who was speaking in Panama in reference to India’s changing response.
It was the first time India had crossed the Line of Control to target a terror launch pad, he said referring to the September 2015 Uri surgical strike. India had not crossed the Line of Control even during the Kargil War but Shashi Tharoor noted that they had done so in Uri and again after the Pulwama attack in January 2019.
The controversy surrounding Shashi Tharoor’s foreign remarks is a reflection of underlying conflicts within the Congress party regarding the party’s national security posture and the influence of individual leaders on India’s foreign policy. As part of a multi-party delegation Tharoor aimed to show a unified national front against terrorism but his comments lauding recent government actions and mentioning India’s cross-border strikes have caused his own party to criticize him. Congress inability to strike a balance between opposition politics and national interest on the international scene is highlighted by Udit Raj’s scathing rebuke which also highlights internal party divisions. This episode brings up more general issues regarding partisan unity and the difficulties of preserving consistent diplomatic messaging in a political climate that is becoming more and more divided.
