Tragedy in Jaipur: 4 Men Killed Amid Unsafe Gold Extraction Effort
4 Men Die Retrieving Gold from Toxic Septic Tank at Jaipur Factory
On Tuesday police reported that 4 men had died after they broke into a septic tank in Jaipur Sitapura Industrial Area in order to extract gold and silver particles. The poisonous fumes in the tank are thought to have caused their deaths.
At a jewelry factory the incident happened late on Monday evening. The tank was 100 feet deep, police said.
Victims and Medical Response
According to local authorities the deceased were identified as Sanjeev Pal Arpit Yadav Himanshu Singh and Rohit Pal. Amit Pal and Suraj Pal were released following primary medical care while two others Ajay Chauhan and Rajpal were taken to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in critical condition. Having entered the tank the workers were unconscious.
Unsafe Working Conditions and Employer Coercion
According to police, the preliminary investigation revealed that the workers’ reluctance to enter the tank was caused by the extreme heat and the presence of harmful gases. The company’s management allegedly convinced them though by offering them more money.
Sequence of Events
Amit and Rohit were the first people to get into the tank according to the police. They soon started to gasp and cry out for assistance. The other six went down the tank one by one to assist the first two but they also passed out. A policeman reported that a chemical sludge from the jewelry manufacturing and cleaning processes was found in the septic tank. It was thought to contain gold and silver particles. In jewelry units it is common practice to periodically clean the sludge in order to extract valuable metals.
Political Reactions and Criticism
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot claimed that 11 people had died in the state in the past ten days in this way prompting the Congress to criticize the BJP government led by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma in Rajasthan for the deaths.
Eleven people have lost their lives while cleaning gutters and septic tanks in Deeg Bikaner and now Jaipur in the past ten days. Congress Demands Accountability
Govind Singh Dotasra the state president of the Congress declared The BJP government’s egregious negligence and disregard for the regulations put in place to ensure the safety of sanitation workers is unacceptable. Despite the repeated occurrence of such accidents the government shows no concern. The government must look into the accident and take strong measures against those responsible I demand.
The terrible results of unsafe labor practices and employer negligence are brought to light by the deaths of four men in Jaipur who were trying to recover gold particles from a septic tank. This incident highlights a more widespread systemic inability to enforce worker safety laws especially in dangerous settings. Accountability and reform are desperately needed in Rajasthan as evidenced by the lack of safety gear management coercion and recurrent incidents of similar deaths. The state government must act swiftly and decisively to stop such avoidable tragedies in the future as the public and political leaders demand answers.
