Independence Day 2023: Our National Flag “TIRANGA” symbolizes sacrifice, truth, and prosperity
Our 77th Independence day is round the corner. The Prime Minister of India hoists Tiranga at Red Fort on this day. Ritual of hoisting the National Flag is of great importance as it rejuvenates the feeling of Nationalism. This Independence Day 2023, know the significance of our national flag.
The Indian National Flag, commonly known as the “Tiranga,” holds profound significance for the nation. Designed by Pingali Venkayya, a freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh, this tricolor emblem embodies the spirit of India’s struggle for independence and the values that the nation upholds.
Design and Colors:
The Indian flag consists of three horizontal stripes of equal length and width, with a ratio of 2:3. Saffron, the topmost color, represents sacrifice and courage, embodying the spirit of those who gave their lives for the country’s freedom. White symbolizes truth, purity, and peace, reflecting India’s commitment to these virtues. The green stripe at the bottom signifies prosperity and hope for a better future.
Ashoka Chakra:
In the center of the white stripe lies the Ashoka Chakra, a navy-blue wheel with 24 equally spaced spokes. This emblem is a depiction of dharma (righteousness) and represents progress and continuity. While the flag code does not specify the exact size of the Ashoka Chakra, its presence adds a sense of unity and purpose to the design.
Manufacturing and Significance:
The Indian flag is manufactured using hand-spun silk, wool, or cotton fabric, known as “Khadi,” as mandated by law. This tradition not only honors the heritage of India’s struggle for independence but also supports local industries. The sole authorized unit responsible for manufacturing and supplying the flag is the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha.
Historical Moments:
The flag’s journey is intertwined with historic events. On July 22, 1947, before India gained independence, the tricolor flag was officially approved. It was raised as a symbol of hope and aspiration for a free nation. In 1984, Indian cosmonaut Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma took the flag into space during the Indo-Soviet space flight, showcasing India’s pride to the world.
Global Recognition:
The Indian flag gained international prominence when Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary hoisted it alongside the Nepalese flag, the Northern Ireland flag, and the flag of the United Kingdom upon conquering Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. This momentous occasion symbolized India’s triumph over adversity.
Our National Flag is not just a piece of cloth; it’s a powerful symbol of India’s rich history, its ongoing pursuit of ideals, and its message of unity in diversity. With its vibrant colors and meaningful emblems, the flag continues to inspire generations and remind us of the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom and prosperity.
