From false claims of a love jihad angle to fake news related to the Bengaluru flood, here are five pieces of news from the kisne feka series.

Another case of Love jihad was reported!

Fake news: Apoorva Shetty, a student at Vidyavardhak Engineering College, Mysuru, was found dead at a hotel on the Mysore-Hunasur Road on 2 September. A man, allegedly her boyfriend, was staying at the hotel with her when he allegedly killed her. According to netizens and media outlets, a Muslim man named Ashik murdered a Hindu girl as part of a ‘Love Jihad’ conspiracy.

Foolproof: The viral claim is false. Ashish, not Ashik, is identified in the FIR of the case, which was filed on 1 September 2022. The FIR also notes that Ashish booked a hotel room without knowing anyone from the victim’s family to kill the victim. The victim’s body was discovered between 31 August and 1 September. The FIR doesn’t mention a communal angle to the case.

Sadhus were attacked by a mob for kidnapping children!

Fake news: A video showing people in the garb of sadhus being severely trashed by a mob is widely circulated across social media. The viral video shows a crowd lashing people dressed in the attire of sadhus with sticks. According to some, the video shows child kidnappers impersonating sadhus being caught and assaulted by locals.

Foolproof: The viral claim is misleading. According to the report of IBC24 dated 8 August 2022, the incident occurred in MP’s Polaha village. 6 people disguised as sadhus robbed a villager under the pretext of religious cures. Fraudulently fooling a woman, they robbed her of valuables and fled. Later the woman’s husband and locals realised the theft, and they started looking for and chasing the sadhus on bikes. The culprits were caught and beaten mercilessly.

The netizens claimed that CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan disrespected teachers during his childhood.

Foolproof: The viral claim is false. A viral video has been cropped and presented out of context. The same remarks can be heard in the YouTube video of OTV dated 4 September 2022. He says, “As I mentioned, I studied in a government school in Jait. Even in Bhopal, I attended a government school. Our teacher, Shridhe Ratan Chandra Jain, is still with us. I used to go to school, and all of us used to keep our feet on his head.” As Chouhan realises his mistake, he says, “We always kept our heads on his feet to seek his blessings.”

CM Gehlot Disrespected Hindu culture!

Fake news: Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot drank holy water (Charanamrit) without taking off the mask.

Foolproof: Viral video is cropped. CM Ashok Gehlot immediately removed the mask with one hand and took holy water with the other.

Crocodile on the streets of Bengaluru!

Kisne feka: A crocodile crawled through the city’s waterlogged streets of Bengaluru during recent floods.

Foolproof: Viral video shows an incident dating back to 16 August 2022 in Shivpuri district in Madhya Pradesh.
