Village Rockstars: All you need to know
The film that swept 65th national film award, Village Rockstar will represent India in the best foreign language category at the 91st academy awards next year. The announcement has been made by Film Federation of India (FII). The Assamese film, Village Rockstars is already a champion for the best feature film, best location sound, best child actor and best editing at the national awards.
Plot
The story portrays a girl, Dhunnu who lives in poverty and has to learn to take care of herself. However, that does not prevent her from dreaming of owning her own guitar someday and forming a band with her friends. The director of the film, Rima Das wanted to be an actor since childhood but fortunately, landed up in direction and film-making.
There was a point when she was emotionally exhausted. Knowing of the ebb and flows in her career, she somehow boosted herself. She suddenly realized that she has stories to tell then, she started working on a short film which earned her a huge fame in many festivals.

Rima never went to film school. She trained herself by watching world cinema. For village Rockstar, Rima couldn’t afford a crew of cinematographer, production designer, director, writer, editor, so she became all herself.
In spite of the challenges, the film took 4 years to complete. In the film, all their child actors are from Rima’s village and family, among which Bhanita Das won the best child actor award. The film let the children learn about craft along with acting. Bhatia said, “Generally films have a huge crew but we only used to have our cousins Rima and Mallika, so we never had any problem or hesitation”.
The film had its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival (2017) and has toured numerous International and national film festivals, since then.
Conclusion
The list of 28 films which had been submitted for the next year’s Oscar included India’s blockbuster such as Raazi, Hichki, October, Padmavaat, Love Sonia, Kadvi Hawa, and the latest release Manto among others. No Indian film has ever won the Oscar. The last film that made into the final five was Lagaan in 2001. Mother India and Salaam Bombay are the two other films that made into the final five.
