Russell James is the lensman with a difference
Meet the official photographer of lingerie brand Victoria Secret. Born and gown up in Australia Russell James, now settled in New York , is considered as one of the great fashion photographers of today.
He is famous for shooting beautiful women for luxury brands from Dona Karan to Vogue. “For the whole life I have been shooting beautiful women for well known brands who are marketing for women and not men. When I shoot women in nude my concentration is on the story behind the concept. I never say to them “you are sexy or so on”. Ultimate result is after the shoot and seeing the print.
Born in Western Australia, James started photography late after working with some known photographers in Sweden. He was impressed with their work that he decided to pick a camera and start clicking. “I was very passionate with their work and decided to take photography as my career though I was 29 then. I went through all process and put myself through aggressive work during those years.”

James works are highly appreciated and today his work has easily become synonymous with celebrating wonders of femininity. He has worked with world famous beauties like Candice Swanapeol, Miranda Kerr, Alessandra Ambrossio, Gisele Bundchen etc.
Though nude photography comes natural to him James does not disguises between nude and the rogue landscapes. “They are both inspiring and beautiful in different ways. But shooting a nude you can pretty look the other way and still get a nice shot with the camera,” he said.
Lately James is into documentary and did one on Ex President Clinton’s foundation and Richard Branson’s foundation. “I did some films also and I found the film is about framing and composition and as a photographer it comes to you naturally. My short films Sardinia and The Apology were well made and appreciated in social circles. I do want to do more films if occasion arise.”
Inspiration comes from different ankles. He is inspired by lines, the shapes, what he sees a dress on people, a beautiful face etc.: In fact life inspires me like any other thing,” he said.
