The latest spurt in prices of pulses not only has the ‘aam aadmi’ worried, it has also driven Papad manufacturers into a state of tizzy.
With pulse prices more than tripling in just a year, most Indian consumers have been hard hit, as this is the prime source of protein for most Indian families.
This price spurt has also suddenly made papad manufacture unviable, as Urad Daal is the major raw material in the manufacture of these pre or post meal delecacies, depending on which region of India one belongs to.
This increase has forced manufacturers in turn to increase prices at their end, which has resulted in a sharp reduction in consumption, not only from households, but hotels too, which have traditionally been big buyers of the stuff.
The sector, which employs more than 350 Thousand people directly, and many more in support infrastructure is now in peril, and manufacturers are praying for early government intervention to prevent most such manufacturers from sinking into oblivion.
