No Shortcut For Good Health

Tapasya Mundhra

All you dieters out there, we know obesity has become a stigma for a lot of people. And we understand why you want to lose weight, because in our society a fat person is looked down upon. We understand that you have been trying out different things every now and then to cut down your weight. But have you realised ever what effects it can have on your body? Well, One World News has always made an effort to guide you all for a better and healthy lifestyle and now we bring you the take of Nutritionist, Dr. Tapasya Mundhra, on various questions you were always searching answers for.

At first we asked Dr. Tapasya Mundhra about her perception on what she thinks is the reason behind obesity in India. She answered “People have started to follow ridiculous forms of diet due to incomplete information. They read things on the net and start following it, thinking that it will suit their needs and will help them lose weight. In reality, what may suit someone may react in the exact opposite way with the others. They starve, eat salads etc. thinking that they are losing weight. But then, eventually with so much restriction that they put on themselves, they end up eating twice the amount. Also, the trend of night clubs, partying etc. has taken a lot of emphasis in the mind of people. Alcohol is a great cause of obesity as people have started to consume immoderate amounts of it, at a young age. Smoking and other habits that have become very common between youngsters due to peer pressure is a great cause of obesity”.

So people, you should realise that drinking alcohol, smoking Hookah or cigarettes etc. is not a Fashion Statement; it can actually cause permanent troubles in your body, in the future.

On being asked if starving is a healthy way to cut down weight, Dr. Mundhra answered, “Starvation is the worst way to lose weight. Firstly, it is the most temporary form of weight loss and secondly, in the long run it leads to permanent damages in the body.” So, people stop starving yourself and eat well, not junk food but something healthy.

Dr. Mundhra also added that there is nothing wrong in going for liquid diet but obviously not forever and not suddenly too, (who can stay on liquids forever, anyway!) “A day of switch to liquids when one is binging more than normal is okay. It is a form of detox, but it has to be carried on under supervision. Things react differently on different people’s body. Everybody is different and every one requires a tailor made food pattern to suit their body. Lack of information can have adverse effect rather than doing well. It is hence not advisable to switch to liquids abruptly.”

She emphasises on the fact that we Indians aren’t able to understand that obesity is a disease and that it is one of the most important issues that have to be tackled in today’s society. “Though people at large are becoming more health conscious but they still need to be educated about obesity. It becomes the reason for all forms of illnesses right from heart problems to cancer, bone issues, diabetes, and hypertension. All organ diseases can also be related to obesity. Hence, it needs to be addressed with a lot of urgency.”

Dr.Mundhra claims that our society instead of treating obesity the right way, has always made an obese person uncomfortable in his/her own skin. Due to which the obese people constantly try avoiding meeting people/family/ friends, and may lead to isolate themselves. She further explains how important is having a balanced way of life, “OBESITY IS CURABLE. The correct way to do it is have a balanced way of life. Eating the right things and at the right time according your body requirements. Exercise religiously and not overly. But one needs to understand that excessive exercise without expert supervision can lead to joint pains. Also with that, if your body is deficit in any kind of nutrient, then the results can be quite the opposite of what one expects, so always do anything and everything under supervision. Junk food should be avoided as much as possible and what makes one healthy is a balanced wholesome diet. When people will start understanding the need and importance of striking correct balance in things that’s when they can have a better healthy lifestyle and cure obesity.”

For our readers she also advised that it’s not necessary that one has to adapt a boring way to lose weight. Workout can be fun too; all you have to do is choose your way. “Working out 1 hour a day is good for having a healthy body. And in the current world that we live in there are more than a 100 ways to work out. There are dance classes, yoga, aerobics, Pilates and the list is endless. Also I would like to add, that if you want to control your weight then you have to overcome stress too, because no matter how much we deny, it does effects the body.”

We all know there are 100 other options for losing weight, and a lot among us think that taking an easy way out would benefit us, but on this Dr. Mundhra said, “All of these treatments are temporary but the effectiveness certainly depends on the medical issues of our body. There is always a huge possibility of fat coming back as fat tissues are still present in body and are active. Hence one also needs to be very careful about their diet and understand that there is no shortcut for good health.”

Ending conversation with us, Dr. Tapasya Mundhra conveys to our readers that if one really wants to follow something written to control obesity in their body, then they should visit some nutritionist, else read Prevention and Healthcare Magazine for reference, but under some supervision.
