Automobile manufacturing to be main driver of Make in India initiative:- The Indian government aims to make automobile manufacturing the main driver of its ‘Make in India’ initiative, as the vehicles market is expected to reach 9.4 million units by the year 2026, as stated in the Auto Mission Plan (AMP) 2016-26, said Girish Shankar, the Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Secretary.

Inside the event

Addressing an event of the CII International Automotive Design Conclave 2016, Shankar stated that the government has formed a scheme for fast adoption and manufacturing of the electric and hybrid vehicles in India, under its National Electric Mobility Mission 2020 to uplift the progressive induction of its electric and hybrid vehicle’s reliability, affordability and efficiency.

He also said that both industries and the industrial organizations have to explore and develop new funding strategies, models and mechanisms for the design and development and how can the outcome be monetized. Amitabh Kant, the Chief Executive Officer, NITI Aayog, said that India should become a country of designs and innovations to attain and sustain a growth rate of 9-10 percent.

He added that the private sector has a major role to play in this development, and the center will soon open four- five new design institutes in the country. He further added that the Indian private sector should also open its own design institutes for nurturing the talented and innovative minds. All Indian companies need to think large to penetrate the global markets by focusing on the exports and themselves becoming an integral part of the economy’s supply chain.

Creating innovative Designs

All Indian digital, IT and manufacturing companies also ought to work together to create an innovative culture for creating the globally competitive designs. He also said that the designs are all about its simplicity.

Arvind Kapur, the Chairman, Special Taskforce on Manufacturing and Make in India, CII and Chairman and Managing Director, RICO Auto Industries Ltd, stated that since India has showed growing capabilities in the auto manufacturing and has successfully designed and built new vehicles, we ought to now focus on the new auto design aspects.

The Chairman of International Automotive Design Conclave 2016 and Executive Director (Engineering) Maruti Suzuki, India Ltd C V Raman, said that the Indian auto industry needs to be an original one but in sync with global trends. Mentioning, Ola and Uber, he said thet they are changing the market trends and increasing the Indian customer expectations.

Besides the functional needs, there is a constant demand for an emotional quotient as well, which eventually enhances the role of design. The Head of Design, Tata Motors, United Kingdom Pratap Bose said that all products are shaped by the society, culture, technology, market, cost, utility, legislation and environment.

He added that India should also focus on the disruptive technologies and leverage its strength in IT and manufacturing. The conclave was attended by more than 400 industry participants from India and abroad.
