Omicron Update: New Corona Virus is spreading at an unprecedented rate, WHO warns!

Omicron Update: Currently, people all across the globe want to get rid of COVID 19. Well, a lot of things have changed post Pandemic. From our approach towards life to our working routine but now people want to fully get rid of the virus. Sadly, that’s not going to happen anytime soon (looking at the numbers of new variants). All we can do is stay safe and keep our loved ones safe. Recently, a new variant of Covid 19 Omicron was detected in South Africa and since then, it has now spread in 77 countries including India.

What Health Experts are saying?

According to reports, the total tally of Omicron cases in India stands at 57 and WHO has warned that it is spreading at an unprecedented rate. Times of India in an article reported that India might witness a surge in Omicron cases in January and February, however, the infections are likely to stay mild.  Well, health experts are warning that it is important to take necessary precautions.

The new variant may cause mild infections but one should never underestimate this virus.  Even if Omicron is not capable of causing severe symptoms but sheer number of cases can overwhelm the unprepared health authorities. And just to remind you – the UK has already reported one death caused by the Omicron variant.

How much should you worry? Keeping in mind what had happened when the deadly second wave had hit India

Talking specifically about India, Maharashtra has reported maximum cases so far. Delhi has reported 6 new cases of Omicron variant but all of them are asymptomatic. Health authorities have assured that the Omicron variant will not overwhelm hospitals as they are making all the necessary arrangements and there is no need to panic. As per the data, 46.6 percent Indians are now vaccinated. In that case, all you need to do is –take precautions.

What are the symptoms?

Unlike the Delta variant, omicron has different symptoms. Since its winter season, falling sick is common. But if you experience a cold, cough, low grade fever or pain in your throat, you must contact your doctor. In that case, it is always good to go for a RTPCR test.

Take precautions as much as you can:

  1. Wash your hands regularly.
  2. Get your dose of vaccine if you haven’t got it yet
  3. Use double mask while stepping out
  4. Try avoiding crowded places
  5. Don’t panic even if you test positive. It is always advisable to maintain distance from your older parents and children.

Note : Anyone can test positive ( Omicron variant) even if you have no travel history. Last 6 cases in India didn’t have any travel history. Apart from it, Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan along with her close friends were also tested positive despite being fully vaccinated. So crux remains the same – TAKE PRECAUTIONS.

New COVID-19 Variant: Why We Should Worry?

Can the Omicron variant lead to another lockdown?

Complete Lockdown in the country is not possible at this moment, it will leave the economy in shambles. After the outbreak of this new variant, the travel industry was hit hard as people went on to cancel their tickets. But governments may consider putting restrictions in different states.  In Tamil Nadu, there is already a lockdown – like restrictions in the state. Apart from it, an IIT Scientist has warned India for the third wave. According to reports, the third wave can hit India in January or February but it will be milder than the second one.
